The loss was the first in the Southwest Conference for Texas (6-1-1) and set up a possible showdown for the Cotton Bowl Saturday when the Longhorns travel to Fort Worth to play 15th-ranked Texas Christian. The Houston victory broke an 18-game conference winning streak for Texas, which also was unbeaten in its past 24 regular-season games. The Cougars (5-4) upset Southern Methodist earlier this season. Houston scored 17 points in the second quarter on a 79-yard pass from Landry to split end Anthony Ketchem, a 48-yard field goal by Mike Clendenen, and a 7-yard scoring toss from Landry to tight end Carl Hilton with only nine seconds remaining in the half. Texas' only touchdown came on a 2-yard run by Terry Orr after the Longhorns recovered Landry's fumble on Houston's first possession at the Cougar 13.

BOWDEN intercepted a pass by Texas quarterback Todd Dodge in the end zone in the second quarter and pulled down a deflected fourth-quarter Dodge pass and raced 62 yards for the clinching score. Before a fourth-quarter completion, Dodge, who had been closing in on Texas' passing record, was 0-for-13 and had four interceptions. He later was intercepted a fifth time, which tied a school record set 40 years ago. Boos could be heard from the overflow Texas crowd of 80,348. Dodge finished with only two completions in 16 attempts for 23 yards, and was replaced with just under seven minutes left in the game by red -shirt freshman Bret Stafford.

Stafford fumbled the first snap, and Clendenen capped Houston's scoring with a 27-yard field goal. The Cougars kicker had three field goals, including a 25-yarder in the third quarter, to give him a school record of 13 for the season. Texas placekicker Jeff Ward On the first play from scrimmage after the half, Higgs, the freshman from Owensboro, rambled 84 yards over right guard to pad Kentucky's lead. Sophomore Bill Ransdell threw a pair of touchdown passes and freshman Mark Higgs scampered 84 yards for another score as Kentucky downed Vanderbilt 27-18 Saturday in Southeastern Conference football. Kentucky hosts Florida next weekend. The Gators, 27-0 conquerors of Georgia, could clinch at least a tie for the SEC title with a win. Freshman Joe Worley booted field goals of 49 and 50 yards as Kentucky, 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC, stayed alive in the post-season bowl picture. This is the first time since a 10-1 season in 1977 that Kentucky has won more than six games.

With representatives of four bowl committees on hand, Vanderbilt fell to 5-4, 2-3 in the league and out of the post-season picture. Kentucky led 14-13 at intermission but scored 13 points to Vandy's five in the second half, starting with the second-longest scoring run in Kentucky history. kicked his ninth field goal in a row, a 42-yarder, to narrow the score to 20- 10 midway through the third quarter, Ward's streak was broken when he missed a 44-yarder into a 27-mph wind, but he later used the wind to i his advantage in kicking a 34-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Houston punter Lonnie Stokes took an intentional safety with 17 seconds left in the game for Texas' final points. Landry's two touchdown passes I were among only four completions in 17 attempts.

The Mustangs ran their record to 7-2 for the year and 4-2 in the SWC to increase their chances of a post-season bowl invitation. The Owls dropped to 1-8 and 0-6.

Alabama, falling to 3-6 and 1-4 with two games left, got its touchdowns on a 2-yard run by Rickey Moore and a 4-yard pass from Mike Shula to Ed Pugh, the tight end's, first catch of the season. LSU capitalized on a poor kicking game by Alabama. The Tigers' first touchdown and field goal came after a 33-yard kickoff return by Garry James and a 34-yard punt return by Norman Jefferson. Alabama moved from its 28 to the LSU 34 late in the game, but a 51-yard field goal attempt by Van Tiffin fell far short against a stiff wind.

LSU has one SEC game left, against Mississippi State next week, plus a non-conference game with Tulane. Alabama, vith Cincinnati and Auburn left, has its poorest season since it went 2-7-1 in 1957, the year before the late "Bear" Bryant took over as coach and led the Crimson Tide to 25 consecutive winning seasons. Alabama went 8-4 a year ago in Ray Perkins' first year as coach. After LSU took a 7-0 lead, Alabama moved 75 yards to tie the game on Moore's run. Lewis' field goal made it 10-7, but Alabama took a 14-10 halftime lead on Pugh's catch.

Third-string quarterback Jeff Burger got the final score from the 1 in the fourth quarter. Clemson 17 Virginia Tech 10 CLEMSON, S.C. Clemson wide receiver Ray Williams surprised a stubborn Virginia Tech defense with a 17-yard touchdown run on a reverse to lead the Tigers at Clemson Memorial Stadium. With Virginia Tech ahead 10-7 and a minute to play in the third quarter, Clemson's Donald Igwe-buike hit a 42-yard field goal.

But a penalty caused Clemson to reconsider the kick, and Williams provided the go-ahead score two plays later. Several possessions after the run by Williams, Igwebuike hit a 44-yard field goal with 2:11 to play in the game to give Clemson the final seven-point margin. Clemson (7-2) took the opening BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Twelfth-ranked Louisiana State kept its Sugar Bowl hopes alive Saturday with a 16-14 Southeastern Conference football victory over Alabama. "I guess we are in pretty good shape as far as that goes," LSU coach Bill Arnsparger said about the conference race.

"But I really don't think about things like that. We just have to take thenar one game at a time." The decision assured Alabama of its first losing season in 27 years. Alabama, Arnsparger said, played well defensively. But he also praised his team for hanging in although Alabama held the ball for almost 41 of the 60 minutes and rolled up 332 yards to 161 for the Tigers. "We are very banged up on defense, in very bad shape physically," the first-year LSU coach said.

"We fought, scratched and clawed to the very end." Linebacker Micael Brooks, who blocked a punt to set up the winning score, said, "We had to stick together. That's what we had to do to win." Fullback Rickey Moore, Alabama's leading runner during the previous three seasons, said he was "truly sad to be part of the losing season." Kevin Guidry recovered the blocked kick at the Alabama 12 and Dalton Hilliard scored from the 7 three plays later for the final points of the game. Bo Jackson ran for three touchdowns as 20th-ranked Auburn built a 36-0 first-half lead and romped to a 60-0 victory over Cincinnati Saturday in an inter-sectional college football mismatch. Jackson, a 1983 Ail-American sidelined for six games in the middle of this season with a shoulder injury, raced for touchdowns of 15, 36 and 2 yards while seeing only limited action. The Tigers of the Southeastern Conference scored almost at will, picking up touchdowns on seven of their first eight possessions and raising their record to 7-3. The independent Bearcats fell to 2- 7 as they suffered one of the worst margins of defeat recorded by the school in this century.

The rout was assured in the first half when Auburn's defense limited Cincinnati to four yards rushing and sacked Bearcat quarterbacks Terry Bodine and Danny McCoin six times for 33 yards in losses. For the day, Auburn had nine sacks for 78 yards. The game was barely two minutes old when Freddy Weygand hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass from Pat Washington.
