it TIMES SATURDAY, JUNE 25, 1983 3 El Salvador too close to ignore, Bilirakis warns By TIM JOHNSON 'V' V) A proposed nuclear freeze resolution gave him difficulty, he said. "I spent the first two weeks on that one almost without sleep, tossing and turning and trying to decide how to go," he said. Dissatisfied with language in the resolution, he finally voted against it "WE DO NOT want to put your life and your faroi-ly life unilaterally in the hands of the leaders of the Soviet Union," he said. Bilirakis grumbled about the lack of Republican control in the U.S. House of Representatives.

He said that, since "the majority party controls all the committees" in Congress, many Republican and even bipartisan proposals get bogged down in committee. He acknowledged that the committees he chose to sit on concerning veterans affairs, small business and the elderly "are not glamor committees." But he said they represent the needs of his constituency, which includes parts of Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough counties. his position by saying it isn't yet "ingrained in concrete." Nonetheless, he said, "if we're going to send troops down there then let's fight to win, for crying out loud, not like in Vietnam." Bilirakis promised to travel to El Salvador personally "sometime before the end of the summer." He called conflict in El Salvador minor compared to the threat Cuba presents to the United States and particularly to Florida "90 miles away," he said. He criticized past U.S. administrations for allowing Cuba to bring in 12,000 Soviet advisors and to build a hefty, air force.

All this is "right in our own backyard," he said. "Shame on us." Bilirakis touched on a variety of subjects during 90-minute question-and-answer session, ranging from problems of the elderly to the rigors of life on Capitol Hill. Congress had to tackle some tough issues this spring, he said, and some of them have caused him "to do some soul searching." CLEARWATER Floridiani should not compare El Salvador to Vietnam, U.S. Rep. Michael Bilirakia, R-Tarpon Springs, warned Friday morning.

The difference is matter of distance, he said. There are less miles from EI Salvador to here than from here to Washington D.C.," Bilirakis told 75 mainly white-haired constituents gathered at Clearwater City Hall. "This is not Vietnam, my friends," he said. "This is an El Salvador that is 800 miles away from our shores." Bilirakis' speech at an informal town meeting in Clearwater was the first of five that he plans to give during this quick weekend swing back to his district BEFORE ASKING for opinions from the audience on troubles in Central America, the silver-haired Bilirakis offered his own. THE STATION didn't do as well in a second inspection Friday. Officials from the Pinellas County Building Department visited and found the station hadn't installed four fire doors or properly installed fire-preventive dampers in air-conditioning ducts. Those improvements were among those agreed to in February. Bob Pensa, director of the Building Department, said the violations that inspectors found Friday will be forwarded to the county legal staff. The station was supposed to be in compliance with county building codes within 100 days after the court agreement was signed, but Pensa said he isn't sure when that deadline is.

Station president Bob D'Andrea said Friday that the work is "99.9 percent finished." He said there have been no problems at the station since the fire. meet codes designed to keep it safe and fire-resistant AFTER NUMEROUS requests for improvements were not satisfied, the city and the county sued the station this January. The station agreed to comply in February. But, as the station officials were getting the work done, the studio came close to what fire officials had feared all along. A fire broke out when an electrical panel exploded last week.

Two men were burned. The fire didn't spread far and caused minimal damage, but it renewed the concern by county building officials and the Largo Fire Department. Largo Fire Inspector Hank Johnson, in an impromptu tour through the building folowing the fire, found what he termed shoddy wiring, a blocked fire exit and flammable carpeting stacked in the building. But, they're getting closer. The studios, at 6900 142nd Ave. were toured by two seta of inspectors Friday. One inspector from the Largo Fire Department said he found the studio had fixed the violations he had found after the June 16 fire. But the other inspectors from the Pinellas County Building Department found that studio officials still haven't complied with building guidelines agreed to in court in February.

The studio, home for a Christian television sta' tion, has been a concern of building and fire officials since the doors were opened three years ago.
