There was but little done. The reports from tbe growing wheat crop are at present very favorable, aad in the face of this there is very little inclination to speculate, while there is no margin for shipment between this and th seaboard. This is taken as evidence by boatmen, experienced in the navigation of the Upper Missouri, of aa exceedingly low water sea on this year, in which event boats will be very ant to come out minus at the present rates of freight J. P. Bvams, of Waterloo, writes to the Dubuque Herald a letter about river affairs long ago. He says: Bot in 1837 there was a rte. mboat arrival at Galena on the 1st of Februar) and, by ths way, there was a little incident connected with this arrival too good to be lost.

At that period tbe people in tbe lead mines received their flour from Missouri, nod in the winter of 1837 tbe stock of flour in Galena waa short, but a little keea-eyed, sharp visage 1 reaohman, bought every bar rel of flour in town, and put the price up immediately to $18 per barreL Bat provi dence seemed to smile upon this country even in that early day, ana blessed th people with rain and sunshine, which caused a general break up; ana very early on mtrn-ing a steamer wea beard coming no Fever River. In a few moments the levee was crowded with excited men. and tbe most excited ef all wa the little Frenchman, who exclaimed with great Tebemeuce, ry tarn; posh steamboat come Mid de And when th steamer run out her gang plank the little Franchmaa was ths first oa ooard, and sure enough he found a steamboat in the Maid of the Mist, with a full carro of flour. which knocked the price down to $8 per barrel. Th following is from th New Tork Tiae It is strange, to say th least, that greater punishment than th revocatioa of a license can be inflicted upon a steamboat pi lot who carelessly runs his boat into another 1 aad sinks her, eanaing loss of life and prop- ty. Such, however, seems to be the ease. according; to the decision of Supervising Inspector Bradford, of tbis port. It appear mat tbe license of the pilot of the steamer Yaaderbilt was revoked some time since br the Local Board of Steamboat Inspectors for his misconduct in running down the steamer uean nice mend oa tb Hudson Kiver, in September last, oaasing the vessel to sink, tbe destruction of one or two lives, and placing a Urge number of passengers ia peril of death. The pilot thus deori vad of bis license carried his ease oa appeal before th Super.

vising inspector, woo, alter carefully review. ing toe evidence, eonnrmea the decision of the local board, but Hading also that the pilot of the Dean Richmond was likewise blamahl. revoked his license aa welL In announcing his decision the Inspector takes itoa ta express his regret that for such hardened eareleseaess" the law provides no more sever penalty than the one he has felt called upon to indict. Th traveling publio will heartily concur in this regret, and demand that a statute be enacted to meet th requirements of such shameful recklessness was apparent in the case thus lightly settled for the offenders. 1 Tbe Evansr ilia Cornier of Triesday says: Captain Henry Scott, of the steamer Chatta nooga, waa attacked yesterday by a maa whom he had lately employed ss mat of his boat.

Th oircumstancee. as near as we can collect era, sue about a follows: Soaae three past, tjaataia Boot told tha mass to loose soaae Una attacked to the boat, when the mate replied by calling thaafsntala an opprobious name. The Captain ordered him np to th oCice sad "receive bis pay, whicn wa done, and then ordered him to go ashore. Tester day be we attacked on the corner of Vine and Water streets by ths mate, when a desperate encounter took place, the Captain receiving a severe wound in tbe head front a short club in ths hands of the mate. The mate, however, was well punished for his cowardly attack.

The St Louis StyMicm of Tuesday says: Tbe weather was warm aad springlike, but a stiff gale of wind from the south filled tbe atmosphere with dense clouds of du-t which rendered out door operations distressingly 'unpleasant. Toward evening, however, rain commenced falling, which event was bailed with oleasure by all. Business opened with a fair show of activity.

Freights to all points were offering in liberal quantities, although at very low rates, ef penally ia tbe New Orleans trade. Tbe exceedingly low rates of freight to New Or leans, established last week aad con-tinned to this, have resulted la tb Barge Company withdrawing from the fight, thus proving conclusively what; has always been claimed by practical and experienced boatmen, that freight could aot be carried a cheap by barge as by steamers. Ia the afternoon a number of gentlemen, representing the A. and M. S.

B. line and th various independent steamers, met in caucus on board th steamer Bismark te devise some remedy for the present useless and ruinous competition, and to establish, if possible, a mode of transacting business that, while it would afford the shipper as Iowa rate as was compatible with jus tice, would afford some remuneration to tb boat owner for the capital invested. Several plans were suggested and argued in favor of. bat at dark nothing bad been decided. One plan proposed was that th steamers Ruth, W.

R. Arthur, Olive Branch, Pauline Carroll and Continental, of the Atlantic nod Mississippi Steamship Line, and the independent steamers Mollie Able, Bismark, Great Republic, Lizx ie Gill aad Coram on wealth, should form a lias irrespective of all other organisations, each loading in turn from the Leviathan wharf-boat; the ten steamer named to be governed by a committee of arbitration, composed of three gentlemen appointed, oc by tbe A. nnd M. S. 8 and tbe others by the independent boats.

The ten boats named are large carrying vessels, and it is thought that if this plan is adopted a low and cheap rate can be guaranteed shippers, and at the asms time give the boat a chance to mak a littl money. Tbe river at. tbis point continues to rise slowly but steadily, with an abundance of water for all purposes of navigation; excepting in the Missouri, which is report! with but four feet ia the channel and falling rapidly. In another column wQ be found the particulars of two suits that have beea entered in tha United States District Co art, one of which is instituted by the Missouri Wrecking Company against the underwriters of tbe Mollie Dozier, which sunk in 1866, and th other is by the Globe Insurance Company against W. No six-foot road can pay its way in competition with narrow gauge, and the sooner the Erie people realize the truth, of this fundamental principle, and act upon it, the better for them. They should make every exertion to induce their neighbors, and all other who tire not too bitterly prejudiced, to do likewise. Democratic seed sown br us this fall and winter upon the lukewarm, tbe doubtful and the Indifferent, will bring a plentiful harvest of Demo cratic vote. From now until tbe election let every Democrat Improve every occasloa to act as a committee of one to obtain subscriber, to tbe Cincinnati Enquirer and (he Democratic local press. The liberty and fortune of the people. In a great degree, hinge upon a Democratic victory la tb year less.

Jssuee ao momentous were never presented to the American people. We urge upon All our friends who approve ot the course of the Mnaulrer In the past, who ostAln Ita present position, who are desirous of political success In the future, te send la their early for oar subscription books for lass. Especially let all who desire to rid the cotmtry of Its enormous taxation, wbo would take Brora the shoulders of labor Its almost Insupportable burdens, who are for equal taxation for all, one currency for all, peace and eonoord between the State, the Government conducted ex cl naively by white men, tak the CindBnatt Anoulrer for 1SSS. Ia addition to th tremendous excitements of tbe Presidential election, we are likely to have general war npoa the Fmiiiitea continent when events wm transpire that no Intelligent tea would like te be Ignorant Of. In every respect th next year will be one that all the people will desire te keep pasted In regard te ha great and leading transactions, so vltallr Important to their public aad personal lateresta.
