TUB i PUB. XO DETEMTIOX IM EJCATIOy OK THE PAPEH. in. About half past even'' o'clock oa Sunday morning the quiet of the Sabbath in our city was disturbed by th cry sf fire, the Incessant ringing of the alarm bells, and the rumbling of the fire engines and hose ear-, riages along our streets. It was soon dis covered from th dens volumes of smoke issuing from theEnywrrr buildings that our establishment was seriously threatened with total destruction: and the firemen, who are accustomed to combat with -the dreaded element, expressed a fear that naught but a WTeek of brick and mortar and th interior, mass of ruin, would be the finale of the conflagration.

The fir broke out in the unner atorv. whioh is used as our news room and storage department for pictorial bills, cuts, ete. How the fir originated we are at a loss to know, although there ara various theories expressed one of which. being that the drippings of oil from the cog wheels and machinery of the hoisting apparatus into some rubbish produced spontaneous combustion. Th flames soon wrapped th show bills in a sheet of fire, the of which being of.

thick paper and colored inks, required but very few minutes for th heat to become intense, and the window giving way, the black amok and forked flames rushed forth in terrible fury. The hissing of th fir king about the bills and wood cots, and the crackling, rambling noise of His Majesty among the type, eases. stands, in the news, room admonished the firemen of the immense exertions which would be required of them to sav th lower part of the building. The engines Citizens' Gift, Fourth, Fourteenth. Tenth, Fifth, and First, were speedily on th ground ana almost instantly were at work throwing their great streams water on to the burning The black immediately gave way -to smoke, but such was the tnaoity with which th fire clung to the builuinr, that three hours of incessant labor was performed be fore th element was snbdued and oonquereL The lower part of the building was completely deluged, and ''great damage has been sustained from the water.

Every room in th building waa flood ed, while in the basement the depth of water was about lour feet. There no doubt but that the tar roof 'which covers oar establishment, assiated in confining the flames to the upper whlWi to ten min utes more of a start, would certainly have re dueed the entire establishment to ashes. The extent of the damage sustained br ibe fire was the total destruction of our news room, in which were tho type, eases, ease atiifids, imposing stands, desks, chases, Ac In the room adjoining, on the same floor and divided by a board partition, where, were kept the pictorial bill used for vari ous circus and menagerie companies, and their wood cuts, the destruction was com' plete, and, particularly at this season of the year, is almost irreparable. liie stock or Mils in tius rwn or au sizes, from the smallest to the mastodon hile the wood cuts, the accumulation of fifteen years, will require a long time to be replaced, if ever they can be restored as per- lei'i and complete as the cuts in our pos- set-tion had hitherto been considered: for it rnn truly be said that the Enquirer job-rottn can boast of the largest assortment and stock of wood cusl. of.

Trumbull said there could nsve been a vote taken on the Louisiana resolution en Saturday night but for the factious opposition of one-third of the Senators. Mr. Wade said he was opposed now, as he bad been always, to forcing a Constitution upon the people ef any state, as the resolution of the Judiciary Committee proposed. It was an attempt such as he resisted when made years ago by the friends of the Le-compton Constitution. It would be an insult to New York, to Ohio and to Illinois to admit Senators from Louisiana, who represent nobody and nothing.

Mr. Howard said the voice of the people nau not ueen neard on this subject, ana thought it ought therefore be postponed until next winter. i Mr. Sprague was opposed to the Louisiana resolution, because he had information to the effect that twenty-five or thirty membera of tbe of Louisiana were office bolder under the Government of tho United States or of the State of which was something. Mr.

Sumner had heard a responsible gen tleman who was in Louisiana when the State Government was formed, say it. was a stupendous hoax, i Mr. Grimes said if the Senate would jrire him a eall be would prove that the votes of outlying precincts were cast by disabled soldiers and others who were carried from Nw Orleans to th polls on army transports and carried back again after voting in the. same way. The Herald special says: The declaration of the rebel paper that -preparations have been made to meet and check Sherman, is received here as conclusive proof that he will' meet with no serions opposition in bis progress through Booth Carolina. The evacuation of Fort Anderson and capture of Wilmington have not yet; been noticed in any Richmond paper. I All the rumors circulated by the secessionists of Lee's movement in progress northward, are without no more foundation than that about hundred and fifty of bis men per day reach here, taking the oath of allegiance to go north. The World Wilmington special says the Ohio has.

been assigned to do provost guard duty, and its commander, Lieut. CoL Jourdan, has been appointed Provost Marshal. The Mayor renders every assistance vt. ktm to ret his department in working order. The city has been dUided into three provost districts, with a separate station for each district.

The rebels left but a small quantity ef stores behind, and these were left because in their haste there was not time to burn -i The navy yard and several founderie, and all vessels that could not be removed, were burned. The privateer Chickamauga was sent up Cape Fear River. A locomotive and several cars, which were hemmed in by Gen. Cox's movement, were likewise destroyed. All the hotels and naarly all the stores are closed.

The Herhl Newbern correspondence represents that the rebel military- forces in North Carolina are in a very ocmoraliaed condition, and that a disposition is manifested on the part of both soldiers and civilians to jeturn to' the Union on the best terms they can get. Deserters from the rebel army are constantly coming into the Union lines. A small party of Union cavalry and infantry recently made an expedition' to Washington, N. where they eaptured 30 rebel soldiers, apparently very glad to be they made no resistance. I The Richmond Examiner, of the 24th, says the Ysnkee force east of Mississippi, does not says the South is being conquered by half her numbers.

It declares thst they can not avail themselves of the recruits now offering, snd complaint of the inadequacy of the present daily rations to satisfy the hunger of the men now in the army.

The Sentinel on the negro question says the bill was lost in the Senate by a vote of 11 to. Those who voted for an indefinite poslponementof the bin, which amounts to it detest, were Baker, Barnwell, Caper-ton, Garland, Graham, Hunter, Johnston of Georgia, Johnston of MosweU, Orr, and Wigftill. Those who voted in v. Her. ry, U.Jham, S-euimes, ruuinis, Urst, naitir, 4ud Wait-on.
