19 North 185-7618 Serendipity Clr. TALLAHASSEE There is a different feeling surrounding the Florida State University football team this week, and it showed on the practice field Monday afternoon. The Seminoles will be facing the No. 2 ranked team in the country Pittsburgh and their intesity was obvious. "I think it will be a real feather in our cap if we can beat them," said FSU head coach Bobby Bowden.

IT MAY BE a battle of quarterbacks Saturday night in Doak Campbell Stadium, with FSU's Blair Williams going against Heisman Trophy candidate Dan Marino. "I believe that both quarterbacks will have to be hot if they are going to lead their teams," Bowden said. Asked to compare this Pitt team to others he has seen, Bowden said, "I would vote them the No. 1 team in the country right now. You can't have a single breakdown if you are going to beat them.

The keys to the game will be execution and not letting them get the big play on you. If you can play with them, you can play with anyone in the country." Bowden feels his team will be ready Saturday. "We haven't been thoroughly tested yet and our second units are still a little shaky, but we will be ready come game time." Reflecting back on last year's game, Bowden said, "Who knows what may have happened if we had scored when we were stopped on the goal line. It quite possibly could have been a different game." HE WAS REFERRING to a first-quarter FSU drive to the Panther 1-yard line, where the Seminoles were stopped on fourth down. Pitt then drove the length of the field and scored its first touchdown en route to a 42-14 rout Bowden also reflected on the 1980 Pitt-FSU game, which the host Seminoles won.

"The big difference in that game was the fact that we got some interceptions and we turned them into field goals. You have to take advantage of the opportunities when they are given to you," Bowden said. As Bowden sees it, both FSU and Pitt must reduce the miscues that occurred in their respective openers. "One thing you have to keep in mind is a team makes its biggest improvement between the first and second games of the season," said Bowden. "We both made mistakes in our game.

Now it will be up to us to come back from those mistakes." week), it's not supposed to be a blowout by any means. Now that we're No. 2, we've just got to try harder." NEBRASKA and Alabama held onto the third and fourth positions in both polls. AP gave Nebraska eight first-place votes and 1,073 points for a 42-7 trouncing of Iowa, while Alabama, a 45-7 winner over Georgia Tech, received the remaining six first-place votes and 1,021 points. North Carolina, fifth last week, slipped to 11th in both polls, while Florida jumped from 11th to fifth in AP with 886 points in the wake of a 17-9 victory over Southern California.

UPI ranked Florida seventh. The Gators' highest AP ranking previously was seventh. (Details, 1-C). Southern Methodist climbed from eighth to sixth in AP with 872 points by crushing Tulane 51-7, and Georgia slipped from sixth to seventh with 846 points despite a 17-14 triumph over Brigham Young. UPI had Georgia fifth and SMU sixth.

Elsewhere in AP, Penn State, which outlasted Maryland 39-31, fell from seventh to eighth with 769 points. Arkansas, a 38-0 winner over Tulsa, rose from 13th to ninth with 693 points, while Oklahoma, which had been 9, dropped out of the Top( Twenty. Michigan jumped from 12th to 10th with 667 points by downing Wisconsin 20-9. UPI HAD Penn State eighth, Michigan ninth and Arkansas 10th. AP's second 10 consisted of North Carolina, Ohio State, Arizona State, For the first time in its history, the University of Washington is rated the No.

1 team in college football. The Huskies replaced Pittsburgh at the top of the Associated Press poll Monday, while Florida also jumped to its highest ranking ever fifth. The Oklahoma Sooners became the first casualty of the season, dropping out of the top 20 after losing to West Virginia. Pitt and Washington had been 1-2 in the preseason and first regular-season AP polls. But the Huskies vaulted over the Panthers by swamping Texas-El Paso 55-0, while Pitt was posting a sloppily played 7-6 triumph over North Carolina.

WASHINGTON, which never had been higher than third since the AP ratings began in 1936, received 28 first-place votes and 1,132 of a possible 1,200 points from a nationwide panel of 60 sports writers and sportscaflters. Pitt totaled 16 first-place ballots and 1,078 points. But the Panthers remained No. 1 barely in the UPI rankings. UPI's 42-member board of coaches gave Pitt 17 first-place votes and 554 points.

Runnerup Washington closed in with 12 first-place votes and 551 "It doesn't make any difference, Pitt coach Foge Fazio said when informed of the new ratings. "I never said we were the No. 1 team in the nation. But when the No. 1 team plays No.

Cribbet said he has asked school administrators and engineers to investigate. The fans reported movement in the upper rows of the middle section of the east side of the stadium.

Cribbet said he wanted preliminary findings and recommendations as soon as possible. The stadium, built in 1923, has a capacity of 71,227. About 66,000 attended Saturday's game. Washington has been to the Rose Bowl occasionally in the past few years, simply parlaying a solid program into teams that could hold their own against Southern Cal and the rest But their appearance in Pasadena always is considered something of a rarity, except maybe among the whole team is back and the Huskies opened Saturday night with a 65-0 trouncing of poor Texas-El Paso advancing them to No.

1 in the Associated Presp' weekly rankings. Everybody gangs up on UTEP. But Miner coach Bill Young, comparing Washington with previously No. 1-ranked Pittsburgh, thought there was no comparison at all. "I'm not being critical of Pittsburgh," he said, "but Washington can do a lot more." The Huskies seemed to do everything possible against UTEP, gaining 534 yards with 288 on the ground and 256 in the air.

And in Dallas, SMU put on an impressive show with its 51-7 rout of Tulane. Tulane may be one of those aforementioned bastions of college football mediocrity, but the Green Wave is rarely considered a pushover. Certainly not a 51-7 pushover to anybody, much less a team with SMU's reputation. But these Mustangs are something special, a team that has been building for the past few years, rather anonymously because of the probation. Last year, the Mustangs probably had the Southwest Conference's best team, but nobody much cared because the Cotton Bowl was off limits to them.

BOBBY COLLINS, who brought Southern Mississippi into a first-ever top 20 spot last year, is the new coach, and apparently his system is working well. Collins likes the run, and SMU's offense liked it well enough to gain 519 yards Saturday night. Tulane coach Vince Gibson is a veteran who has seen many football teams in his time. "SMU has as good a team as I've ever played against," said Gibson. Gibson was one of several observers who went out on a limb and called SMU potentially one of the greatest teams in Southwest Conference history.

So, the advice to those who keep up with college football must be: Look past the usual assortment of perennial top 10 teams and pay attention to the doings in Seattle and Dallas. But the thousands of experts who believe they know enough about college football to pick a national order of OKLAHOMA LOWS: Saturday's loss to West Virginia also prompted an assortment of negative statistics on the Oklahoma side.

For coach Barry Switzer, it was the first time his team had lost a season opener in his 10 years with the Sooners. Also, the 41 points scored by West Virginia were the most against Oklahoma at home since 1928 when Nebraska routed the Sooners 48-0. PASSING ANOTHER MILESTONE: Stanford quarterback and New York Yankee minor-league outfielder John Elway got his college team off on the right foot Saturday by throwing four TD passes while completing 29 of 37 passes for 333 yards in the Cardinals' 35-14 victory over Purdue. His first TD pass of the day was No. 54 in his career, giving him the school record.

Jim Plunkett and Jack Thompson shared the mark of 53. Next Saturday's matchup between Stanford and San Jose State pits coach Jack Elway against his son for the fourth time. The 76ers, as well as attorneys for Malone and the Players Association, had contended there was a clause in Malone 's con-. tract that prohibited the transfer of the right of first refusal from one ownership of the Rockets to another.

In addition to rejecting this contention, Brewster ruled the clause of the offer sheet calling for Malone to be paid a certain bonus if he did not earn a fixed amount in outside endorsements did not have to be matched by Houston. NBA commissioner Larry O'Brien said he was pleased with the ruling. "We are naturally very happy my earlier determination that Houston has the right of first refusal was upheld.
