He quickly eliminated his last remaining opponent of the 77 contestants taking part in the two-day annual spelldown.

At the start of the final and 17th round Susan O'Malley, 13, of Phoenix, began by agonizingly trying to spell gigot. It means a leg of Iamb or the mutton sleeves of a woman's dress. After making several starts with "jig" and asking definitions and pronunciations several times she finally spelled it jigot. Under the rules, Knisley had to try the same word. The confident 12-year- old smilingly asked for the definition again and rattled it off correctly.

Then to nail down his victory he had to spell one more word correctly. And without hesitation he spelled shalloon. It's a french name for the fabric of a coat lining, named after a French twon. Jonathan was sponsored by the Philadelphia Bulletin. Susan's sponsor was the Arizona Republic.

The two-day bee, sponsored by Scripps-Howard Newspapers in 15 cites and 59 other daily and Sunday papers, began with 77 contestants, 53 girls and 24 boys.
