King, 77, was serenaded by Tony Bennett singing "The Best is Yet to Come" via remote from Louisiana. King had announced this summer he would leave, ushered out by a struggling network. Once the dominant voice in cable television news, King has foundered in a sea of sharp talkers.

British talk-show host and "America's Got Talent" judge Piers Morgan takes over the 9 p.m. Eastern time slot in January. "You're not going to see me go away, but you're not going to see me on this set anymore," King said. "1 don't know what to say except to you, my audience, thank you, and instead of goodbye, how about so long?" Except for an agreement to host four specials a year at CNN, what his work future holds isn't clear. He has talked of doing comedy or going back to some radio work.

A parade of guests stopped by, including news anchors Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters and Brian Williams, who were in CNN's New York studio. President Barack Obama delivered a taped message, and former President Bill Clinton KGMB-TV scores a win on Mondays, but runs even with KHON-TV on other weeknights BY ERIKA ENGLE enkastaradvertiser.com The success of "Hawaii Five-0" on Monday nights helped boost the ratings of Hawaii News Now on KGMB-TV to double that of its closest competitor, KHON-TV. The CBS series, which airs from 9 to 10 p.m., leads into the 10 p.m. news on affiliate KGMB, which earned a 16 rating, 36 share on Mondays, compared to an 8 rating, 17 share for KHON. The "rating" is the percent of all TV households in Hawaii tuning into a particular show, while "share" is the percentage of people watching TV at that time who are tuned in to a particular show.

The playing field levels out Tuesday through Friday nights at 10 p.m., according to figures provided by KHON. Those nights KHON and KGMB are in a dead-even tie at 10 p.m. with an 8.5 rating and 22 share. KHON continued to dominate the 6 p.m. newscast with a 12 rating and 28 share.

NEWS RELEASES issued by Hawaii News Now and KHON both claimed victory in the ratings contest, while officials at K1TV could not be reached. KHON's news release trumpeted that it has proved "once again to be Hawaii's news leader," in keeping with the branding statement its reporters recite at the end of each of their stories. Hawaii viewers "chose KHON2 as (their) favorite daily news provider," and tuned in for breaking-news coverage, said Joe McNa-mara, president and general manager, citing viewership numbers on election night Nov. 2. Meanwhile across town, "Hawaii News Now continues to dominate local news," according to its press release, further stating that it remains "Hawaii's undisputed evening news leader." Hawaii News Now shows are produced by a team of 6,000 shows for CNN.

Before the Fox News Channel and MSNBC even existed, King had cable news' top-rated program. Politicians, entertainers, leaders of industry and the faces of news stories hot in the moment all sat across the table from King. Some critics said he often seemed ill-prepared and tossed soft-balls, while King described his style as "minimalist," with the goal of getting his guests to talk. Fred Armisen of "Saturday Night Live" delivered a King impersonation Larry interviewing Larry dressed in the same bright red suspenders and polka-dot tie. Armisen's "Larry" asked what question King had asked more than any other.

King replied: "Why?" "The best question of all is because it can't be answered in one word and it forces people to think," he said. made his 29th appearance on the show, via remote from Little Rock, Ark. "You say that all you do is ask questions," Obama said. "But for generations of Americans, the answers to these questions have surprised us, they've informed us, and they've opened our eyes to the world beyond our living rooms." California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger thanked King for moving his show from Washington to Los Angeles, and to declare it "Larry King Day" in his state.

King's wife, Shawn, and sons Chance and Cannon appeared on set. Chance, in particular, injected some levity with a dead-on impersonation of his father, including the Brooklyn accent. King has conducted some 50,000 interviews in a broadcasting career where he worked for decades in radio before joining CNN in 1985. He has recorded more than FIND the pages of for KGMB and KHNL officials to combine the shows' ratings, share points and demographic information for bragging rights and sales purposes. KHON's press release claims its 5:30 p.m. "World Report with Joe Moore" is "again number one," but figures the station provided to the Star-Advertiser show that the "ABC World News" on KITV has the same ratings. Favorable audience demographics for "World Report" tip the scale in KHON's favor, the station said.

They were merged under a shared services agreement announced by station owners in August of 2009. AFTER MORE than a year of newscasts and ratings growth, "we are positive 201 1 will provide even more excitement for Hawaii News Now," said Rick Blangiardi, general manager.

Officials at Nielsen Media, the ratings service, gave Hawaii News Now its blessing to refer to the shows it airs across two stations at once as simulcasts, though they are not always synchronous, and though one station often will carry different commercials than the other during the same time slot.
