U. Cuerry, Minister Minister believes Ark of the Covenant was electronic device A California minister who believes that the Ark of the Covenant was actually an electronic device designed to communicate with God has announced plans to build an exact duplicate of the ark and its surrounding tabernacle (tent) in the California desert. Robert St. Pierre, who identifies himself as bishop of an independent "St. Pater's Church," says that the cost of the reconstruction using the same amount of gold, silver, copper and other materials prescribed in the Book oft wiN exceed $28-miWon.

He believes, he says, that the ark (a box built, according to the Bible, to hold the tablets containing the Ten Commandments) and its appurtenances made it possible for the early Jews to hear the voice of God from "another dimension." Another critic scores 'Lost Ark' film The film, RaidtrtofthtLottArk, is "top-notch escapist entertainment," but it contains good measure of religious hokum" and offers a "mumbo-jumbo version" of the religious significance of the Ark of the Covenant and the Ten Commandments. So says Robert E. A. Lee, executive director of the Lutheran Councii-USA's communications office. Lee adds that the film, by reducing God's law to horror, vengeance and violence, "may fit into to theology of Hollywood but it certainly doesn't fit the theology of the Bible." Methodist ministerial students still attending 'unapproved' seminaries More than 120 United Methodist ministerial students have registered this fall at seminaries not approved by the denomination, despite warnings that they may not be admitted to the Methodist ministry following graduation.

Church authorities made their first-ever evaluation of non-Methodist seminaries this year and denied approval to six that they said do not provide adequate opportunity for Methodist students to study their own doctrine. Five of those schools are appealing the decision: Ashland, Ohio (Brethren Church-Ashland); Trinity Evangelical, Illinois (Evangelical Free Church in America); Eastern Baptist, Philadelphia (American Baptist); Lutheran Southern, South Carolina (Lutheran Church of America); and Erskine, South Carolina (Associate Reformed Presbyterian). Choosing not to appeal is Lutheran, Philadelphia (Lutheran Church of America). Thirty-seven seminaries were approved by the denomination, three received provisional approval and one Oral Roberts University is still under review. Twenty-four seminaries did not seek Methodist endorsement.

Baptist hits Reagan budget cuts The Reagan administration's budget cuts are "asking for a social disaster on an installment plan," says Dr. James Dunn, executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs. Dunn, participating in a televised panel discussion, said the elimination of funds for social programs represents a "guaranteed scenario for human-need disaster" and "a terribly risky gamble when the folks whose lives are at stake are the poor." But Ross Hanna, a Southern Baptist home missionary from Tucson, disagreed, saying the budget cuts would be a good thing. He added: "I have faith in the government that they will be able to work together (with Christian organizations) for a better helping program. Some people will starve, but they already are." Minister status denied female teachers in Missouri Synod The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has denied its female teachers status as "ministers of religion" even though it grants that title to male teachers who perform identical work.

The decision means that the women cannot receive tax benefits available to the men. The synod's attorney warned that continued refusal of the synod to grant equal rank to the women jeopardizes the status of all non-pastors who are ministers. The synod, however, ruled that male teachers differ from females because they can exercise public pastoral functions that are not open to women. The synod does not ordain women pastors.
