V. M. DENNY directed mission. pinellas schools Sakkis asks outside help in re-evaluating fire hazards FRANK DeLOACHE St. Petersburg Times Staff Writer LARGO School Supt.

Gus Sakkis Tuesday asked fire inspectors from nine outside agencies to help school inspectors re-evaluate each of the county's public schools for fire safety violations. Left unsettled was what will be done about the violations found during the cooperative inspections, which will be made during the next 10 weeks. Sakkis said he wants to have another meeting then. The superintendent said it is "inexcusable" that schools have ignored "housekeeping problems" such as the storage of books that are fire hazards which would not cost a lot of money to correct. He pledged to take care of those problems.

But correcting more expensive fire safety violations will depend on the money available to the school system, Sakkis said. THE SCHOOL BOARD voted recently to ask fire department inspectors to accompany school inspectors after the Evening Independent printed a complete list of fire, health and safety violations found by school inspectors during their annual 1979 inspections. Those who met with Sakkis Tuesday were from eight fire departments in Pinellas County and the state fire marshal's office. School officials estimate that it would cost to correct all the fire safety problems. Some local fire inspectors have complained that a number of the same violations have been found year after year without correction.

"We have no problems with making the inspections" of schools, Seminole Fire Chief Robert Genhold said. "The principals welcome this. But many of the problems we find fire doors locked open, books stored in boiler rooms, locking fire extinguishers in janitorial cabinets BAUGHMAN Mrs. Jane Aleen, 70, 1046 26th Ave. North, died Monday, March 24, 1980.

"THAT'S A GOOD point, and that's what these inspections can correct," Sakkis said. "I think it's inexcusable on our part, and I expect our The (building) violations managers to do this." cited in inspections of Pinellas schools last year range from improperly stored materials that can be moved to structural problems in buildings that would require more work and money. At Clearview Elementary School, for example, a state fire marshal cited 22 violations during a January inspection, including: Combustible storage which could be books and paper materials, paint or other flammable liquids- in an electrical room, an area in which a fire might start.

A potential electrical problem in the clinic, where an extension cord runs through a a a a a a a a a doorway and could fray and short out. Too few fire escapes. State regulations require that students on 1 the second floor of a twostory building have a second exit available if their room is more than the length of one classroom from the stairs. This is required so that a fire at one stairway would not cut off the only means of escape for students farther away. School officials estimated in July that adding another fire escape would cost $15,000.

During the meeting Tuesday, Jerry Dennis, fire chief for the combined district of Ozona, Palm Harbor and Crystal River, asked who would be responsible for correcting the violations cited in the upcoming inspections. He said recent court decisions have held fire inspectors liable if they cite violations and then see that the problems are corrected. BUT SAKKIS said the school system's inspectors would actually write the reports, because they are required to send annual reports to the State Department of Education. In addition to any local fire departments that send employees on the upcoming inspections, Tompkins said his office will send an inspector to each school if school administrators make that request. He said he has not gotten final word from school officials.

Fire inspectors from several cities said they will continue to make their own inspections of schools during the school year, checking for compliance with fire codes adopted by their cities. "I don't believe these (fire code regulations adopted by the state for all Florida public schools) are as strong as other codes," said John Howard, Safety Harbor fire inspector. Seminole inspector Ben Cramer said, "The problem is that the schools may think of this as just an annual inspection that they get ready for and then forget about. But this is a 12-month job." IN OTHER discussion, Sakkis said: Fire department inspectors can make inspections without warning individual schools, but he said school system inspectors would like to accompany them to see the violations they find. Fire department officials can also request unscheduled fire drills in all the schools at any time as long as the principal or someone in the school's office is told first.

But Sakkis asked that the fire departments be reasonable and delay such drills important school-wide test is being given. Schools are to begin reporting all fires that occur in the schools. Some of the inspectors said school officials did not call them about small fires, such as ones set in trash cans. The inspectors said they want to know of every incident, no matter how small.
