JOSEPH SILVERIA Officers hunt man feared river victim An all-points bulletin has been issued for a man reported drowned in the Kern River last June 15.

Kern County sheriff's office said bank searches have failed to reveal any sign of Joseph Silveria, 18, Santa Maria. "Because he was still on his inner tube and in no visible trouble when last seen, there is the possibility he got out of the water," a sheriff's spokesman said. Silveria and friends were floating down the Kern River between the mouth of the canyon and Hart Park. About 100 yards west of the Merle Haggard residence, the others heard rapids ahead and headed for shore, they told deputies, but Silveria continued down the river. When Silveria didn't meet them at their pickup vehicle at Hart Park, friends reported him as missing to the sheriff's office.

Search and rescue volunteers and deputies have made regular bank searches since then, and have failed to locate Silveria or his inner tube. "An all-points bulletin is now on the victim in the hope he is still alive," the spokesman said. Silveria is described as 5 feet 9, 135 pounds, with a cross tattoed on his lower right or left arm, long hair, sideburns and a mustache. Of Portuguese descent, he speaks Portugese and English. Persons with information on Silvera's past or present location mav call the Kern sheriff's office, 327-3392, extension 327 or 328; or Elsie I'ereira.
