Dates 102 100 10 400 Boxer Johnny Owen dies of respiratory complications Johnny 0wn, a shy, skinny Welsh boxar who rwvsr regained consciousness after being knocked out by Lupe Pintor on Sept. 1 9, died Monday night at the California Medical Center in Los Angeles. His death was due to "respiratory complications due to hit prolonged coma," a hospital spokeswoman said. "The physician said his condition deteriorated rapidly in the past 1 2 hours due to pulmonary insufficiency and the onset of pneumonia." The hospital delayed announcing Owen's death until his relatives in Wales could be notified. Owen had undergone brain surgery twice after his loss to champion Pintor of Mexico City in their World Boxing Council bantamweight title bout at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The British and European bantamweight champion, Owen had remained in very critical condition since being admitted to the hospital shortly after the fight. Owen, a hero in his native mining village of Merthyr-Tydfyl, had never before been knocked out in a pro fight. In the early rounds against the heavily favored Pintor, Owen was the aggressor. But the champion began to assert himself in the middle rounds, twice knocking Owen down for eight counts. Then in the 1 2th round, the tiring Owen ducked into a powerful Pintor upper cut and dropped unconscious to the canvas.

The loss to Pintor was only the second in the career of the fighter nicknamed the "Merthyr Matchstick" because of his skinny 5-foot-8 Vi frame. He had won 26 fights and fought a draw. Bjorn Borg snubbing Swedish press Bjorn Borg has come home, but he's doing his best to keep it a secret from the Swedish press. Borg returned to Sweden from Japan for the Stockholm Open Grand Prix tournament, but has steadfastly refused to have anything to do with the local press. Now, Borg is apparently displeased about the heavy media criticism of his plans to play American rival John McEnroe in South Africa.

McEnroe, also in Sweden for the open, confirmed that it was his idea to cancel the match because of the apartheid policy there. Borg's annoyance with Swedish journalists began more than four years ago when the 24-year-old superstar refused to play in his native country for 1 8 months to protest what he called persecution by sports writers. 'Battle of Jawbreakers' Friday night Undefeated Randall "Tex" Cobb returns to his home state for a world-class heavyweight boxing match Friday in San Antonio with Ken Norton. The 1 0-found bout in HemisFair Arena has been billed "The Battle of the Jawbreakers." Cobb, a native of Abilene, won his 1 7th consecutive victory 1 6 by knockouts) by stopping Earnie Shavers three months ago in Detroit. Earlier this year, he defeated Texas heavyweight champion Roy "Cookie" Wallace and Mexican champ Chebo Hernandez. Norton, with a lifetime record of 4 1 wins, six losses, one draw and 33 knockouts, will be attempting a comeback after a first-round knockout loss to Shavers and a draw with Scott LeDoux in 1979 led to his voluntary retirement.

UF basketball player ruled ineligible Bob Van Noy'a basketball career at the University of Florida is apparently over. The 6-foot-9 junior learned Tuesday that his appeal for a grade change was rejected by the University's Petition Committee. "We Bre disappointed for Bob, but this ruling means he will not be eligible for continued matriculation at this university," said first-year Gator coach Norm Sloen. Van Noy averaged 10.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game as a sophomore a year ago. Tampa's WBL franchise sold to Boston After eight months of uncertamity, the status of Tampa Bay's entry in the Women's Basketball League has been officially decided.

On Saturday, the league's Board of Governors voted to authorize the transfer and sale of the Tampa Bay Sun to a Boston group of investors. According to WBL interim commissioner Sherwm Fischer, Bill Byrne, the league's former president and owner of the Sun, no reason was given for selling the franchise to the Boston group or not keeping the promises he made concerning his franchise in T8mpa Bay. 4 MB Qvarnpagne I Manasota Missy NINTH RACE 5 14 Mae.
