Arnold felt at the time that his restricted work schedule simply wouldn't permit him to oversee the show as he had done in the past However, ABC exercised a contractual option to renew the show, so Barney Miller did continue for another year. But that, everyone knew, would be its last THE FINAL THREE episodes of Barney Miller (the last of which airs tonight) paralleled these goodbye scenes on Stage 79. The 12th precinct, where Capt Miller and his detectives have presided all these years, has been declared a historical landmark.

The staff has all been reassigned Wojo (Max Gail), Harris (Ron Glass), Dietrich (Steve Landesberg), Levitt (Ron Carey), Inspector Luger (James Gregory) and Barney Miller himself all preparing for the moment when they'll have to say goodbye. "We're not going to rehearse that scene at all," Arnold says. "We tried it before and it got too emotional. So we're just going to shoot it and see what happens." "It's been difficult all week long. We try not to talk about it, but it's hard to fight the depression of leaving all this behind.

On the other hand, we still have a show to do. It's been tough." There seems a genuine affection for Arnold on this set, perhaps due in part to the fact that as demanding as he might be, the quality of the work speak for itself. "THIS HAS BEEN AN experience unique to television," Linden says. "Most of television is by nature a medium of expediency, but this is one of the few places where that's never been the case. And that begins with a producer who's dedicated to putting out a quality product.

It has to start there." Another quality that has been a Barney Miller trademark is the ensemble playing of its cast. Like M'ASH, Taxi and precious few others, Barney Miller has been a comedy of characters, not one-liners. And its humor evolved as much from our knowledge of who these 'characters were and how they reacted as it did from the material. Noam Pitlik, who directed some of the more memorable episodes of the series, says that Barney Miller was not "traditional television in the sense that you put anything out there and if enough people watch it, fine. We had a respect for what we did every week.

Even though some cast members left and new writers came on, the show maintained its integrity. I think it's the best show on television, and what distinguished it from everything else was that each week' we went out with the intention of creating the best television show we could." THE 12TH PRECINCT IS all packed up and ready to go now. The one-room set of the Barney Miller station house holds a good many memories not only for its cast and crew but also for its longtime fans. You look over to one side of the room and expect to see that marvelously defeated expression of Abe Vigoda as Detective Sgt. Fish, the human raincloud who dominated the early years of Barney Miller.

Over by the coffee machine, you remember the late Jack Soo as Sgt Yamana. Soo's death prompted one of the more poignant television moments of recent years, when the remaining cast of Barney Miller broke from character to reminisce about their friend and colleague. You remember the naive Wojo, the hustling Harris, the irascible Inspector Luger, the infuriatingly cerebral Die- HOLLYWOOD On stage 79 of the Sunset-Cower Studio, home of ABC's Barney Miller, the witnesses are gathered for the last hurrah. Assorted other family members, friends and acquaintances scramble around trying to And a seat. Instamatic flash bulbs pop all over the place. Hal Linden patiently poses for anyone who asks. And toward the end of the day, a few tears. AFTER EIGHT SEASONS and 170 episodes, Barney Miller will roll before the cameras for the last time. Unlike most television shows, Barney Miller has chosen its own time to die. Danny Arnold, who co-created, produced, directed, wrote and generally mother-henned the show through its eight years, decided that the time was right to move on to something else. "It's primarily going off the air because it's just too difficult to maintain the quality," Arnold says.

"I've given my all; everyone has. But it reaches a point where there are diminished returns. We did 170 shows we're proud of. And we don't want to do anything that would hurt the quality of that work." Actually, Arnold was prepared to close down Barney Miller at the end of last season.
