Saint JJapjfg Beacoq. MD. THURSDAY Morning March 27. Fire haa destroyed the last documentary evidence which, it is alleged, would have disproved the charge of conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln against Mrs. Mary Surratt.

The residence of her counsel, Col. John W. Clampitt, of Highland Bark, in whose possession was the evidence, was burned together with all the documents in the case. The documents were ready for publication. He said that he would try to rewrite the documents.

of the Deacon.) Washington, March 25, 1895. Spain has so much trouble at home just now, that the President, with true gallantry baa decided to give the Queen Regent time to find ont what she is expected to apologize for and if she is of the mind of some of our naval officers, she will do anything but apoligize for an occurrence that was a right in such times as those, when Cuba is in rebellion and draws her supplies from i the States where she has thousands of sympathizers. Senator Dale favors acquisition of Cuba by the United States either by purchase or conquest. Senator Morgan is of the same mind, but Senator Lodge demurs at giving citizenship to the particolored and partly civilized population of the island. And so while waiting investigation of the Allianca affair, those who love war and alarms look with interest at the little cloud further South that may without a momenta warning burst into a storm, for England has sent her ships to Venezuela with a demand for indemnity which must by paid in money or concessions, and as the United States is pledged to the Monroe Doctrine and has also ordered ships to rendezvous in Southern waters to protect the interest of the Venezuelans there may be serious complications.

The most sensational episode of the week was the demand made by the Secretary of State for the recall of Mr. Thurston, the Hawaiian minister, who is also an American, and who has offended by giving to the papers matters purely diplomatic. The President has provided for two of the ex-congressmen. Springer, of Illinois and ilgorc, of Texas, making them Judges of the new Courts of the Indian territory. Kilgore is such a determined and person that his Court will in all probability be one of sensational and dramatic scenes.

Other rejected Democrats still linger here and hang around the White house and Dcpaitments looking for something that will save them the necessity of returning to their constituents. The poor member of congress were not so much to blame as the eighteen Senators from the nine States of Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Montana and Idaho, Oregon and Washington who held the balance of power in the Senate. The eighteen States lying North of the Potomac and Ohio rivers and east of the Missouri have a majority of forty six in the house ont of a total membership of 350. While the above States have a majority in the in a total membership of eighty-eight only thirteen members in the House. While the great States of New Vork, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois have only eight Senators but one hundred and seven representatives.

Hills originating in the House had little favor shown in the Senate. The gold reserve of the country is to ho still further depleted. The French look two million as dower of Helen Could, daughter of Jay Could who married the Count Castiliane, and now the heir to the Earl of Searsdalc is to marry the beautiful Mary Leiter and with her a princess dower goes. Leiter pore originated in Washington countv, Maryland and from there went to Chicago where as one of the firm of Field and Leiter he achieved fame and fortune. Having retired from business he came here and built a colonial mansion of white stone on Dnpout circle.

The daughters of the family are all lovely and very accomplished. while the good hearted but illiterate mother is the Mrs. Malaprop of society. Further inroads on our securities arc threatened by the arrival of the young Heal of Westmeath, an at; tachee of the English Embassy and a bone of contention for the manoeuvring mothers. Among the charitable institutions started here, the one in which St.

is specially interested is the House of Mercy presided over by Mother Alphonse of the Order of I Mercy, and whose assistant in this noble work is none other than Sister Hernadine (Wegie Stone) beloved by all St. The House of Mercy has been established in the Elliott mansion on North Capitol street, just a square from the Capitol and is designed to afford a home for girls who have work and a shelter for those who' have none. Already the house is crowded and among the inmates are some from the lower counties. None are turned away; those who can, pay board those out of employment are cared for and aided as far as possible. The good work is retarded for want of means to enlarge the house and care for all who apply.

Sister friends should remember her and give her meterial assistance. This paper gives the sad tidings of the death of one beloved and revered by all who knew him. One whose tender, sympathetic heart prompted him to com- fort and sympathize with all in I trouble. No one ever went to Father Keating that did not find both comfort and pleasure in his society. If he is mourned here so deeply, wbat will be the grief of his former parishioners for whom he had ever a word of affection and a prayer for their happiness Eternal rest be his reward.
