National Page 28 GREELEY TRIBUNE June 2, 1971 Ji Pirates End Cords With 3rd Straight By KEN RAPPOPORT Asseciaftd Sports Writer Pittsburgh's swashbuckling pitchers have been leaving (heir mark on National League hitlers tlie Mark of Zero. "It's qnile a feal," boasted Pittsburgh interim Manager Bill Virdon, referring to three straight and 3D consecutive scoreless innings by the Pirates' new-found strong- arm staff. It is quite a feal--for Pittsburgh. Before Dock Ellis silenced St. Louis 0-0 on three hits Tuesday night, the last time the Pirates put three shutouts together was in 1958 with Ron Kline, Vernon Law and Bob Friend.

Before Ellis pitched his beauty, Bob Moose and Steve Blass spun consecutive shutouts over Chicago. The victory was the i straight for Ellis, who is "on the verge" of becoming one of the best pitchers in the majors, according to Virdon. The Houston Aslros nipped the Atlanta Braves 7-6, the Montreal Expos downed the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 and the New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 in the National League's other games: Tuesday. A i a League: Milwaukee 5, Cleveland Minnesota 3, Detroit California Kansas City 4, Boston 2 and Oakland 5, New York 2. Ellis didn't overpower the hoi Cardinals 'as he halted their seven-game winning jslrcak, but nevertheless had them under control.

"You don't have lo strike oul anybody to win in this game," said Ellis, wlto struck out four as he won his seventh game in 18 decisions. "I used to think I was a fast ball pitcher. No more. My ball is a moving ball. I'm relying more on the slider and starting to use a sinker even more." The sinker and the curve were i where they were supposed be Tuesday night- low.

And that's why the Birds kept battering the ball into the ground and why the Pirates came up with two double plays lo make it easy for Ellis. Actually, it was all over iri the first inning when Pittsburgh shelled the Cardinals' Chris Zachary from the hill with a five-run binge capped by. Ellis' two-run single. Cesar Cedeho'and Jesus Alou each got four bits and knocked in three runs apiece to. pace Houston over struggling Atlanta, which lost its llth in 13 ganies.

Cedeno blasted his third homer-of the year over the center field fence in the third with Wade Blasingame aboard. Cedeno, hitting doubled home Joe Morgan from i i the seventh and boosted his average 20 points fo .216 wilh the three-hit night. The Davis continued his hot streak, baling safely in his 24th straight fiflh-inmng single. Ed Kranepool highlighted a hree-run inning with a double and Cleon Jqnse capped a two-run fifth cilli an RBI double in the New York success. The Giants -cut the Mets 1 margin to one run with a two- run rally in the eighth before relievers Danny Frisella and Tug McGraw came in to save starter Gary Gentry's victory. Nats Edge Angels, 6-5, On Maddox Home Run By HAL BOCK Associated Press Sports Writer The lights-started going out in Washington's RFK Stadium al just about the time Elliol Maddox started coming on.

Maddox, on the bench al the start of the game when all (lie electricity was going full blast, came in as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning, delivered a single and remained in the lineup. Then, after Ihe game had been delayed 32 minutes by a power failure, Maddox produced some of his own wilh a three-ran htmcr in the bottom of the sevenlh lhat provided Washington's 0-5 viclory over California. Elsewhere in the American League Tuesday, Oakland's Vida Blue won his llth game, beating New York 5-2, Kansas City downed Boston 4-2, Min- nes'ofa frimmed.Detroit 3-1 and Milwaukee defeated Cleveland 5-3. Baltimore and Chicago had the day off. In the National League, Pittsburgh shut out St.

Louis 9-0, Houston nipped Atlanta 7-6. the New York Mels shaded San Francisco and Montreal topped Los Angeles 5-2. No olh- cr games were scheduled. Maddox, one of the bodies involved in the Denny McLain trade last winter, was on the bench strictly on merit. He had just a dozen hits all year before Tuesday night.

The.homer was his first of the year, increased his HBI total to eight and lifted his balling average lo .177. The Senators were leading 3-2 when half of the stadium lights went out while California was batting in the lop of the seventh. The game was delayed 32 minutes because of the failure in the -Stadium's high voltage circuit breaker. Maddox' homer increased Washington's lead lo 6-2, giving Ihe Senators enough of a cushion lo "withstand California's three-run rally in the eighth. Blue retired 17 consecutive New York batters and mowed down the Yankees to run his season's record to 11-2.
