The German driver, who goes into today's race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway two points behind two-time defending world champion Hakkinen, earned his seventh pole of the season and the 30th of his career in yesterday's qualifying on the new 2.606-mile, 13-turn road circuit Schumacher took the early lead with a lap of 1 minute, 1 4.492 seconds, Midway through the session, he went out with Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello and, as the two took turns drafting off each other, lowered the fast time to 1:14.266. GOLF: Justin Leonard shot a 5-under-par 65 to emerge with a two-stroke lead after three rounds in the Texas Open. With a 13-under 197, the 1997 British Open champion led Mark "Wiebe, who also shot a 65 and had a three-day total of 1 99. Blaine McCallister followed at 200.

Leonard nailed three birdies over the first 10 holes, then birdied the 15th and 16th before bogeying 17th and recovering with a birdie on 18th Carol Semple Thompson of Sewickley, won the first three holes and easily defeated Toni Wiesner of Fort Worth, Texas, 5 and 4, to successfully defend her USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship title. The win at the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club was Thompson's fifth USGA title, beginning with the 1973 U.S. Women's Amateur. She also won the 1990 and 1997 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur.

Thompson advanced to the final by winning her morning semifinal over Cecilia Mourgue D'Algue of France 1 up. It was a rematch of last year's championship final.which Thompson won on the 19th hole. Wiesner made a birdie from 20 feet on the 16th hole to edge Patty Moore of Charlotte, N.C., 1 up in the other morning semifinal. Bob Murphy, who hasn't won in three years, sank a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th green for his second consecutive 6-under-par 66 to take a two-shot lead after 36 holes in the wind-blown Bank One Senior Championship. Murphy's 12-under-par 132 put him two shots ahead of Jim Thorpe, Gil Morgan and first-day leader Bill Brask.

Thorpe and Morgan each shot second straight 67s, while former club pro Brask rallied after two early bogeys for a 70 after his opening round of 64 Ireland's Padraig Harrington shot a 3-under-par 68 to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Belgacom Open. He had a bogey on the last hole to finish at 13-under 200 on the sunny Royal Zoute course by the North Sea. Denmark's Soren Hansen and England's Lee Westwood share second place at 201 Hansen eagled the 1 2th and 1 5th holes for a 63. HOCKEY: Minnesota Wild defenseman Sean 0'Donnell was suspended indefinitely by the NHL, pending a hearing, for his fight with Anaheim's Antti Aalto on Sept. 20.

0'Donnell and Aalto fought during the third period of the Mighty Ducks' 3-0 preseason victory. O'Donnell received a major penalty for fighting, a game misconduct, and a match penalty for attempting to injure The Edmonton Oilers came to terms with their last remaining restricted free agent, signing winger Ryan Smyth to a three-year deal. Smyth, who again led the Oilers last season with 28 goals, missed two weeks of training camp during the negotiations, but worked out with the University of Alberta team The Philadelphia Flyers announced 18-year-old right winger Justin Williams had agreed to a three-year contract. Williams was the Flyers top draft pick, 28th overall, in the 2000 National Hockey League entry draft. A native of Cobourg, Ontario, Williams tallied 37 goals and had 46 assists in 68 games last year while playing for the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League.

COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER: After opening the season with four straight wins, the Princeton men's soccer fell to Dartmouth 3-1 yesterday in the Ivy League opener for both teams at Lourie-Love Field in Princeton. Reserve forward Robbie Daly scored twice in the final 12 minutes to break a 1-1 tie for the Big Green. Princeton took a 1 -0 lead in the game when Mike Nugent cracked a shot into the lower right corner in the 24th minute, but Dartmouth (3-2, 1-0) came back to tie it when Nick Magnuson hit from 40 yards out 12 minutes later Steven Lee buried two goals as Burlington County College came from behind to top Middlesex County College 3-1 Michael Sadegian scored the only goal of the game for the Colts off an assist from Francois Pirale for a 1 -0 lead in the 48th minute. Ingo Dittel accounted for the only goal of the game as Seton Hall defeated Notre Dame 1 -0 on Friday night in a Big East contest at Notre Dame. COLLEGE WOMEN'S SOCCER: Amee Reyes struck for the only goal of the game as Princton topped Dartmouth 1-0 yesterday in an Ivy League contest in Princeton.

Reyes took advantage by a mistake in the back by the Big Green and connected in the 36th minute. Jordan Rettig made two saves to post the shutout for Princeton (5-0, 2-0), which outshot Dartmouth (3-2, 0-1) by an 1 1-6 margin Holly Shiber scored twice and Tina Mooney contributed two assists as Wilkes won its fifth straight topping Kean 3-0 yesterday in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The Cougars held a 12-5 advantage in shots but couldn't break through the Wilkes defense. COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY: Hilary Matson posted a hat trick in a span of 2:09 in the second half as Princeton levelled Dartmouth 5-0 in Ivy League action at Class of 1952 Stadium in Princeton. Matson's outburst gave the Tigers the 5-0 lead.

Princeton (5-0, 3-0) took a 2-0 in the first half on goals by Claire Miller and Aviva Meerschwam in the final 1 1 8 in the half with Meerschwam connecting with 10 seconds remaining. Goalkeeper Kelly Baril earned her third shutout of the season for the Tigers with three saves. COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY: Josh White and Emey Bowers finished second in their respective races yesterday when Middlesex County College competed at the Philadelphia Metropolitan Small College Championships. Bowers was second in the women's division in a time of 21 :39 while White led the men's team to fourth place in the men's division in 28:39. Other men's finishers included Ray Ostrowski (22nd 31 Jason Petti (32nd 31 Roy Vlaun (46th and Joe Anderson (47th COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Seton Hall snapped a five-match losing streak by sweeping Virginia Tech and Howard yesterday at the James Madison Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va.

Kari Belin recorded 14 kills and 11 digs in 16-14, 15-11, 15-7 wins over Virginia Tech. Paige Ellertson paced the Pirates against Howard with eight digs and five block assists as Seton Hall won 15-5, 15-5, 15-4. AUTO RACING: Matt Kenseth, tuning up for his regular ride 24 hours later, drove to an easy victory in the NASCAR Busch Series event yesterday at Dover Downs International Speedway. Next, he goes for the second win of his Winston Cup career today in the MBNA.com 400. In just three starts on the Monster Mile in NASCAR's elite division, Kenseth has three top-10 finishes including second behind Tony Stewart in June.

The victory yesterday in the MBNA.com 200 was his second in Busch competition on the high-banked concrete track where he won the fall race in 1998. It was his third Busch win this season and 10th overall. The 28-year-old driver from Cambridge, who started 14th, took the top spot for the final time by passing the Pontiac of Dave Blaney on the 1 61 st of 200 laps. Kenseth then drove off to win by Ik r5t The Associated Press Patrik Elias tries to get past Islanders' Ray Schultz in their preseason game last week. Elias is skating without linemates JasorTAr-nott, who is holding out, and Petr Sykora, still recovering from his tonsilectomy.

By KARA YORIO STAFF WRITER Patrik Elias, Jason Arnott and Petr Sykora are very good individual players. Together over the last two seasons they became a great line. The danger in finding a combination that clicks as well as the Devils' top three comes when a third or more is missing. It is a danger the Devils now face. Sykora has yet to skate with the team since the end of last season.

He had his tonsils out and lost a lot of weight and is unlikely to be ready for the season opener less than two weeks away. When he does return, he will need time to catch up. Arnott, meanwhile, remains at home in Wasaga Beach, Ontario, insulted by management's contract offer. Elias knows what Arnott is going through. Last season he held out, played in the Czech Republic and, when he finally returned and signed with the team, it was a deal he felt was too low from the beginning.

Contract holdouts are boring and complicated, tiresome and frustrating. For Elias, the Arnott could be career-affecting, and it's not even his squabble. "We'll see," Elias said when asked if, without Arnott, he might lose some of the gains he has made in the last two seasons. "I don't know. Obviously the best match we can have is me, Petr and Jason.

We click as a line. Maybe we'll do good with somebody else, too. Just maybe we'll have to change our game a little bit." Making the team's leading scorer change his game doesn't seem like a good idea. Elias should be thinking about improving on his season, not altering his style. "I know if me, Arnie and Petr, if we ever get back together, which doesn't look like it, but I know that if we work together as a line and help each other, we can grow as players and get even better," Elias said.

Elias appears to view this as another personal challenge. "I want to grow as a player," he said. "I want to get better every year, every game. Last year showed me what I was capable of doing. I want to prove to myself that it wasn't luck." Elias sets goals for himself before each season.

A year ago, he thought 20 goals would be great. He had never done that before. Then, despite missing time in his contract holdout, he led the team in scoring and set career highs of 35 goals, 72 points, nine power-play goals and nine game-winning goals. He was the first Devil since the 1993-94 season to reach the 30-goal mark. Now he's eyeing 40.

"That'd be nice," he said without coming out and saying he was aiming for 40. "Obviously I want to have a better season. It doesn't mean that I'll score more goals. Call 1(877) 735-SELL(7355) NOTES: Alexander Mogilny's hat trick led the Devils past the Flyers 4-2 in last night's preseason game at Continental Airlines Arena. Philadelphia came back from a 3-0 deficit with two short-handed goals in 1:14 early in the third period to make it 3-2. Mark Recchi and Justin Williams scored the goals on Martin Brodeur, who took over for Chris Terreri halfway through the second period. Williams, 18, was the Flyers first round pick (28th overall) in June's entry draft.

He signed a three-year contract with the Flyers yesterday. Randy McKay scored the Devils other goal. The video montage before last night's game was an edited version of the Stanley Cup season to say the least. But it's hard to show the best of 1999-2000 without holdouts Jason Arnott and Scott Niedermayer. Among other things, the Devils current recap of their championship is shown without seeing either of the goals scored in the clinching Game 6 2-1 victory.

Niedermayer and Arnott were the goal scorers. Claude Lemieux is also missing from the clips. Petr Sykora skated on his own for a half-hour yesterday morning at Continental Airlines Arena. Philadelphia 0 0 2 2 NewJersey 1 2 1 4 First Period 1. New Jersey.

A 9,765. season), I was pretty consistent and. I want to just keep that going." Coach Larry Robinson wants the same thing because a consistently productive Elias should mean success for the team. But Robinson won't single out Elias as the man who must carry the load for the defending champion Devils. "I don't want to put any added pressure on him," Robinson said.

"I just want him to go out there and play hard like he did last year. If he does, everything will take care of itself. "It's not right to say, 'Oh Patty, you had a good year last year but you've got to have a better one this I think if he continues to play and improve like he has in the past, he's going to have a better year without even having to think about it." The opposition's attention to Elias and Sykora will make the season even more difficult. "It's another challenge for us to" prove that, even though they're aware of us and may play us tighter, we still can do everything," Elias said. "We're a year older and have more experience.

We went through the whole playoffs and got the Cup, it gives you the experience of what it takes to win. We've just got to use it to our advantage." In Wasaga Beach, that advantage sits untapped. In the South Mountain Arena weight room, Sykora tries to get ready for the challenge ahead. On the ice is Elias, a left winger on the first line without his mates, preparing to start the season without the support that helped him to new heights last season. 450 HELP WANTED FULL TIME 450 HELP WANTED FULL TIME 450 HELP WANTED FULL TIME AUDIO VIDEO INSTALLER Residential- Looking for a DRIVERS A fast growing courier Co.

Insurance By RICK CARPINIELLO STAFF WRITER DALLAS For all of the Rangers, 1999-2000 was a professional disaster. For Adam Graves, though, it was worse. For Graves, last season was also one of personal tragedy. So no Ranger is looking forward to 2000-01 more than Graves, for a number of reasons. Knowledge of ghosting PC's ft network ft us detail oriented person to provide administrative ft When Graves made his promise to Low, that this season would be better than last, that things will be different, Low figured he was referring to the team. Graves doesn't talk about himself that way. "But, you know, Graves never really thinks about him," Low said. "He's the ultimate team player, and I think if it's good for him, it's good for us.

That's the thing we have to get across to a lot of players, that there's a lot of things we can do better, and it's going to be better for all of us." It will be better if Graves buries the type of saucer pass Messier put on his stick early in the game Thursday. For the first time in three years, a goal read: Graves from Messier and Brian Leetch. Graves said it "felt like old times." "I asked Gravey if he had scored a few like that," Leetch said. "He said, 'Oh yeah, quite a few like that. Empty netters.

Saucers right onto the stick, and just knock in into the net." NOTES: Rookie defenseman Mike Mottau, still unsigned but with the team ona tryout contract, was to make his Rangers debut last night against Dallas. Low used Petr Nedved on the power play point Thursday and liked the way it worked. Messier, Graves and I-eetch were all back in uniform last night. Low was lukewarm in Pavel Brendl's performance Thursday. Asked if Brendl showed him anything.

Low just said, "Yeah, a couple of times. A cotiple of times." ent situations and you just try to become stronger be cause of it," Graves said. "You count on your family and your friends, and you work together. I know all my strength and perseverence comes from my family, my wife and three children. You just move on from there and have fun.

I get to play a game I love to play, and I get to play it with my family. That's what it is, my family." He found the strength to persevere through his father. "Unfortunately, there are things you can't control," he said. "I think you just do the best you can, be as honest as you can and work as hard as you can, and the things you can control will fall into place. It doesn't matter what you do, and it's a lesson my dad always taught me, regardless of what you're doing, you give it your all and you'll never have to question anything when you do that." There was nobody happier than Graves when Messier signed in July to return to New York after three playoff-less seasons for both the Rangers and Messier's Vancouver Canucks.

Graves knew Messier was coming back when Messier attended the memorial services for his father in Toronto. "It's not easy for anybody to go through that; that was something nobody wishes on anbyody," said Messier, who assisted on one of Graves' three goals in-Thursday's preseason game in Atlanta 774 Gov't Postal Jobs Now Hiring In N.J. $14.10 to Benefit!
