My hero attended school here, Paul Robeson." Danny Glover AT RUTGERS UNIVERSITY "I loved the creativity," Phipps said, glad he wife dragged him away from anafteruoon preparing tax re? turns. i He said OkyeV" music gave 1 By FREDERICK KAIMANN STAFF WRITER Film star Danny Glover resounded like one of God's trombones yesterday, narrating a Rutgers University music student's world premiere at the school's music and verse celebration of Black History Month. Glover preached "The Creation," Harlem Renaissance poet James Weldon Johnson's first entry from his 1927 book "God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse." "Great God, like a mammy bending over her baby, kneeling down in the dust, toiling over a lump of clay, till he shaped it in his own image," Glover proclaimed, as he clutched his hands together. "Then into it he blew the breath of life, and man became a living soul." Glover has been a staple of Hollywood, both frivolous and serious, starring in such hit movies as the "Lethal Weapon" series, "Operation Dumbo Drop" and "Angels in the Outfield," as well as serious films including "A Raisin in the Sun," "The Color Purple" and "Beloved." Wearing a chalk-striped gray suit and yellow tie, the graying Glover was accompanied by the bright melodies of a clarinet and the soothing voices of strings during "The Creation," a musical composition by Nkeiru Okoye, 26, the first black composition doctoral student at Rutgers in more than 25 years. At six feet tall and wearing a shiny silken suit, Okoye conducted the premiere, cueing nine members of the Rutgers University Symphony Orchestra and the attentive Glover who stood at a music stand.

"This is my first time on this campus," Glover told the audience during the relaxed program organized by Okoye and Rutgers poet Abena P.A. Busia. "My hero attended school here, Paul Robeson." Robeson, the polymath athlete, actor, singer and human rights advocate, was a Rutgers star football player, debater and singer in the nineteen teens. greater depth to Johnson poetry, refreshing the verse's" impact. "Her music represented the spirituality of that poem," he said.

"I haven't read it since college 20-some ago." i Phipps' friend, Dr. Rebecca Whlti Johnson, a principal at Fisher Mid dle School in Ewing Township; said, "I'm very proud that young black artists are creating and ari building on the foundation of othef black artists." "We have some bridging of the generations," added her husband, Don Johnson, a guidance counseloj; at Franklin High School and resk dent of Franklin Park. I Their daughter, Paula Jones of Scotch Plains, was bribed to attend the concert by a free ticket. "It was inspirational to see someone writing like this and getting Dannv Glover to perform it," she said. BROOK THEATRE, Hamilton and East Main streets, (732) 469-9665 Affliction (R) 5:30, 7:45.

My Favorite Martian was fun," the Long Island native said, breathlessly rushing to catch a limo driving Glover to dinner. This concert, called "When Prose Becomes Song: Musings of African-American Poets and Composers," began with the inspirational spirituals of the Opera Ebony Repertoire Company from New York and concluded with operatic tenor William Brown singing "Runagate, Runagate," by Oberlin University composer Wendell Logan to Robert Hay-den's text.

The spirituals set a somber mood that "Runagate, Runagate" and "The Creation" turned around. "Lord, how come me here? Lord, how come me black?" the tenor Ce-dric Cannon asked in the slowly unfolding medley of lamenting spirituals. "I'm so glad trouble don't last always," mezzo Vanessa Ayers sang on the themes of hardship, hope and history. Soprano Lorene Spain, whose magnificent voice was as curvaceous as her ample figure, sang spirituals comparing black slavery, struggle and freedom in America to biblical stories of exodus and salvation. "Someday Lord, peace on earth," she sang.
