Hickam Jr. (Delacorte Press, $23.95) instincts, but they realize they aren't as secure as they think. Darnell, the most stable character, who takes his moral obligations as a husband seriously, finds out how easy infidelity becomes when barriers in his marriage seem impossible to overcome. Every character male and female has faults and secrets.

Thankfully, Dickey often goes beyond the "men are dogs and women are victims" stereotypes. The lives of these six people are interwoven with some surprising twists. "Cheaters" opens with a third-grade Stephan telling his adulterous father he has "three wom-ens," to assure his father he's a "real man" like him. Dickey uses slang and an informal style that will particularly resonate with younger adults. Dickey articulates personal pain and happiness well enough to make characters sing with realism.

Darnell poignantly confronts a cheating friend who got his comeuppance. "Every man kills the thing that he loves," he says. "Some with a look, some with flattery, the coward with a kiss." Dickey faced a challenge to make this quick-read story fresh. Infidelity isn't exactly an original topic. At least two of the novel's scenarios conjure up images from films.

A spurned ex-girlfriend destroys some of Stephan's clothes in a scene reminiscent of the car set on fire in "Waiting to Exhale." The clash of Darnell's writing ambitions and his wife's pragmatism recalls a similar conflict in "Soul Food." But Dickey manages to inject enough insight to give "Cheaters" a sheen of originality. strings of Richard Wagner in "deep orchestral movements of space and the universe." Perhaps that rhythm helps Hickam when he doesn't feel like writing. However, he has another motivation: the satisfaction of reading his work in final print. 'The fact is, I love to read what write," he says with a laugh. "And, you can't really do that if you don't keep going.

You don't get to savor it too long, but if it ever gets to the; point that it seems like my job, I'll stop." As a NASA engineer, Hickam thought he had fulfilled his boyhood dreams. tf, During his career at the Marshall Space Flight Center in he worked on many projects, including training astronaut crews for the Hubble Space Telescope deployment and repair missions. When he retired in 1998, he was the lead payload training manager for the International Space Station' program. "I never expected the huge out-' pouring of love and affection from Rocket Boys," he says. "I don't take it personally.

People in West Vir- ginia are proud of this book, and in terms of selling books and the movie, that's nice, too. But I had a good life before all this. I've had a' life of adventure." On Tuesday, he will celebrate the Apollo 11 mission in Huntsville which he proudly calls Rocket Cityjj U.S.A. On that day, the rocket park at the U.S. Space Camp will be named after him.

Unlike scientists who have difficulty writing or writers who fear numbers, Hickam says he makes the most of both sides of his brain. As a child, Hickam raided the Coalwood School library for new science-fiction books. His favorite author was Jules Verne. "My third-grade teacher told me I would be a writer," he says.

"I think she may have been a little disappointed when I started building my rockets." While writing came easy, math did not. The space race and the dream to build NASA rockets encouraged him to reverse faltering algebra grades. It may have taken him a while to realize a third-grade teacher's premonition, but Hickam now writes every day from a home overlooking a hillside that reminds him of West Virginia. After a cup of coffee, he starts tapping the keys on his word processor at about 7 a.m. He says he does his best work before 11 a.m.

Some mornings he awakens with a desperate need to punch out the dialogue of the next paragraph; other tunes, he forces himself to press ahead. "When I think I'm hot, I usually overwrite," he says. "I'll use too much detail, too many fluffy words. I often do my best work when I don't want to be writing." He likens his writing to music and describes it as having a "a constant refrain or sense of movement." once kept watch beside his television set throughout the night, hoping to see promised footage of the Jupiter-C rocket launch. He drifted in and out of star-filled dreams. "The Tonight Show" came and went. Static replaced the stand-by sign on the screen. All the while, he stayed at his post.

He slept with his face buried in the rug in front of the set. With sleep no longer tempting at dawn, he was wide awake to watch the rocket zip from its platform. Looking at his father, he said with pride: "We're going into space, Dad." Hickam, a retired NASA engineer turned successful author, describes that scene in his best-selling 1998 memoir "Rocket Boys" (which was renamed and made into the movie "October He's now 56 but says rocket launches are still a thrill. "It's quite easy for me to put myself into the boy so awed by Sputnik," he says from his home in Huntsville, Ala. That wonder partly inspired his new book, "Back to the Moon." It's his first novel and is a techno-thriller.

In it, an ex-NASA engineer skyjacks a space shuttle to the moon to retrieve the isotope he-lium-3, a powerful energy source that is rare on Earth but abundant on the moon. Eric Jerome Dickey explores these mores with verve in his fourth book, "Cheaters," which follows six black twentysomethings and their romantic travails. The story is told mainly through three Los Angeles-area residents. Stephan is a swinging bachelor who feels no need to commit. Darnell is tempted to stray with a woman who understands him more than his wife, who relegates his novelist dreams to a hobby. Dickey explores the decisions those three and three supporting characters make as they forge tentative relationships. What gives the book a compelling edge is the characters' self-discovery. After Stephan and Chante become involved, the baggage of their past spills out at the worst moments.

When Chante is invited to the home of Stephan's parents for dinner, she endures laughs from family members when one of his former flames shows up and makes a scene. The young son of one of those families appears in "The Sound of Trumpets," the new and final volume in Mortimer's Titmuss trilogy, following "Paradise Postponed" and "Titmuss Regained." But, except for Mortimer's sharp-eyed observations, superb writing and wit, the three books about Conservative politician Leslie Titmuss aren't similar to those about bumbling, rumpled Rum-pole. Titmuss is a long-range planner. In THE SOUND OF TRUMPETS By John Mortimer (Viking, $23.95) "The Sound of Trumpets," he bends the high intelligence housed in his aging, cold-natured body toward taking revenge on his district's Conservative Party candidate, whom he believes helped betray his idol, Margaret Thatcher.

He plans to unseat the traitor by showing Terry Flitton, the Labor candidate, how to get elected in a Conservative district. Then Titmuss will choose the next Conservative candidate and guide him, moving the Conservatives back onto his idea of the right track. Mortimer, who is 75, is amazing, not only thoroughly knowledgeable about English politics but sounding right-on when writing about teenagers and about women. He has a wonderful middle-age female character, Agnes, a Labor supporter whom candidate Flitton already with a young, beautiful wife falls for. Women readers will appreciate Agnes.

Readers also probably will feel rather sorry for Flitton, who persuades himself that he can compromise to get votes, then "do the right thing" after he's elected. At the end of Part 1, Flitton has just won and is heading toward his victory party. "Contrary to all reasonable expectations he had passed over, and all the trumpets would be sounding for him on the other side." Changing a word in Carly Simon's song, "You're So Vain," one could sing to Flitton, "You probably think this book is about you." It isn't. Mot with Leslie Titmuss around. winds up with an unwanted passenger: a beautiful, troublesome biologistauthor.

Writing the novel offered a respite from writing "Rocket Boys," which Hickam says was at times overwhelming. "To write a memoir, you have to dig down deep into your soul to bring out the truth," says Hickam, the son of a coal mining supervisor from Coalwood, W. Va. So, he wrote parts of each book during the same time period. The novel also allows him to be a part of this summer's celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission that put Americans on the moon for the first time on July 20, 1969.

Hickam has dedicated the book to his wife, Linda, and the men and women of NASA. "They've given me a lot of inspiration and not a little bit of heartburn," Hickam says of his former co-workers. Although Hickam's goal is to entertain, he hopes his novel will keep traveling to the moon foremost in readers' minds. Perhaps he wants to rekindle the 14-year-old in all his readers. "I want to remind people that once we had the opportunity for greatness and we seized it," he says in an almost reverent tone.
