Finding The Way WHAT SHOULD SET OUR PACE? Dr. Loew has an inspiring answer -o- -o- MMSUIW of Standardt By RALPH W. LOEW, DJB. Vltimn Hr AMU. OW THAT VANCE PACKARD has shown tht of trying to keep up with the Jonses, perhops It's good time to discover that we ought not to bt keeping up with the Khrushchevs.

Wt aJways need to Improve the economic situation In em country, not because It Is important to outstrip Russia, but because it is essential nature of our stewardship to rightly use eta resources. We want to improve race relations. It is the moral thing to do. We want to strengthen understanding of responsible freedom. It is essential to our understanding of life as demonstrated in a democracy.

We want to improve our educational opportunities. It is the just and righteous thing that each person shall find possibilities tot disciplined learning. The trouble with allowing our enemies to set the pace ia that we unwittingly get into their game. Tlie Israelites confronted thai fact centuries ago. Moses had been their leader and had challenged them to a new concept of freedom and righteousness.

They wtrs on their way to freedom. But when Moses went up into a mountain and was gone from them for a month, he returned to discover these people worshiping their enemy's golden calf. Challenged, they came up with the lamest e.xcuse in all history as to why they were doing this thing. "We thought that you had gone away from us," they said. Thta ia onr problem, too.

We need to be repentant before Ge4, Bot apologetic before our enemies. In these important times it is imperative that the pace be set not by parties or label.s nor by our enemies or our critics. Tht pace ii set by that deep abiding conviction that the person Is a being of dignity, meant to accept tlie gifts of God and ahart them with the miracle of creative ability. When we accept standards for goodness beyond the going rate in International or community affairs, then we will be people who do good works. We will be a people capable of the best and prepared to share it.

We'll know that the pace is set by what we ought to be, and not by how we react to our enemies. Just being anti-Communist will never save us and will unfortunately deliver us into a posture of defenslvencss. We'rw not to keep np with the Jonnes or the Khmshrhers. We are meant to "press forward to the high catling In Christ Jesm." We are meant to constantly rethink our goals, lest we worship the gods of our enemies. It is the mark of honesty when a man searches of his toul, asking who sets the pace for his life.
