Connie Mack Debuts in Temple City By KARL WH1TEZEL Temple City in the past has offered a variety of baseball programs for boys aged 8 through 16 yea rs Senior Babe Ruth was the only avenue for graduates of Ihose age brackets. Now Connie Mack offers an alternative Because of the drive of Lou Paletta. the city is fielding its first Connie Mack team through the auspices c-f the Pony-Colt League and under the sanction of the Connie Mack Baseball organization. Paletta serves on the Pony League Board as Vice-President, Connie Mack Division.

Like most parents who become involved in running youth baseball leagues. Lou's motives were somewhat prompted by his own son's interest in baseball. And, like most parents, he's traveled through the various organizations in the city as his son grew. "Our area has a lot of Connie Mack teams," Lou said, "and we (ell it was advantageous for Temple City to hjve a team is composed ol boys aged 16 thru lg who live in Temple City and Rosemead, and we'll be playing in a league against Duarte. Whittier, San Gabriel, Arcadia, Monrovia, E) and Alihambra.

We play a 14-game season, with out opening game on Monday night at Whittier Narrows a gains I Duarte. Every Thursday night we play at our home field at Rosemead High under the lights. The competition'll be tough," he continued. "Two teams have freshmen college players. San Gabriel High, which won it's 3A title this season, makes up the San Gabriel team wh ich will be a tough team.

Whlltier's Sierra High was also in the playoffs in the CIF and they're on the Connie Mack team. So the competition is certainly there for us." Paletta, who works as an accountant, wasn't trying to sound pessimistic. "This is our first venture into the senior baseball league and, quite frankly, it'll take us a little time to gain eicperience as a team. Connie Mack traditionally represents an excellent calibre of baseball-Leo Rasmussen played on the Monrovia CM team a few years ago and he's been signed hy the Astros (or 1100,030: Dan Larson was with the Alhambra group and he's been signed hy the St. Louis Cardinals; Tim O'Donnell of El Monte's team is now wilh the Giants for PO.CflO.

I'm sure the list goes on and on. "Since our Pony League hoard authorized the expansion about six months ago, I've received tellers from six major league ball clubs asking for copies of our playing schedule." Besides heading up the Connie Mack team on the board, Paletta will serve as team manager. "We had a top managerial talent selected. Larry Thielen, but a family illness forced him back to South Dakota. Brad Trather, from Cai; Poly, will help with the coaching." Players who have signed contracts to play on the team are: Mark Paletla, Jack Carlton, Rich Ludt, Rohby Bennett.

Hobby Helen. Tony DeAngelis, Kurt Porler, Greg Betti, Pat Carrigan. Jeff Brown, Mike Orduno, Chris Rice and Rarrvon Mon-cayo. Three of the 13 members are pitchers from varsity high school ball, while the balance come fmm the Colt and JV teams in the "The response has beer terrific. Paletla continued "We've already lined up several players for next season.

The team is here to stay and it's something (hat's been needed, because too many good ball players come out of our city's systems win have had to compete to get or one senior team. And we the calibre of ball that ca al tract the best players in the Cily.".
