Although stock prices failed to sustain the upward momentum of Tuesday's session, they did not give up any of their large gains, either. Oil stocks dominated the day again. The Dow Jones average of 30 industrial stocks edged up 0.28 to 1,904.53. That left the index less than 5 points short of its record. Gainers outpaced losers by 6-to-5 among New York Stock Exchange-listed issues.

On Tuesday, the Dow Jones average spurted more than 32 points, propelled by the nation's major banks cutting their prime rate to 7.5 percent from 8 percent and by computerized buying programs. The average set its record close 1,909.03 on July 2. The Big Board's own index set a record Tuesday. Wednesday's session did start out strongly, with the Dow Jones average rising more than 7 points in the first hour of trading. But it quickly fell back.

And its low point came at noon, when the average was down more than 5 points. Market watchers said they expect buying and selling interest to peter out as the long, Labor Day weekend approaches. There was some negative economic news on Wednesday. Sale of Louisiana TV station completed selling price for the station and its Appeals in New Orleans rejected a move by G. Russell Chambers.

District Judge Nauman Scott earlier this month ordered the sale completed by Aug. 26. Scott ruled after the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of assets was million. Chambers had refused to go through with the sale to NASCO after he changed his mind about selling the station.

After a non-jury trial, Scott ordered CTR to sell the station. Wheat settled Vi cent to 1 cents higher with the September contract at $2.48 a bushel; corn was Vz cent lower to l'4 cents higher with September at a bushel; oats were cent to 2 cents higher with September at a bushel; and soybeans were 5 4 cents lower to 23,4 cents higher with September at $4.75 a bushel. Coffee futures were higher mostly by the 6 cents a pound daily trading limit on the Coffee, Sugar and Cocoa Exchange in New York. The December contract, for which there is no limit, advanced by 6.15 cents. Analysts said the runup was mostly on technical market factors. Settlement prices were 5.59 cents to 6.15 cents higher with the September contract at 201.50 cents a pound.

Bank of Miss, acquires 7th largest bank JACKSON, Miss. (AP) The state's fifth-largest bank, the Bank of Mississippi, has signed a merger agreement with the state's seventh-largest bank, First Mississippi National Bank of Hattiesburg. The two had been working on a merger since May 1985, when the Bank of Mississippi won a three-way battle to gain control of First Mississippi National Bank, which was then experiencing financial difficulties. On Wednesday, the boards of both banks agreed to exchange Bank of Mississippi stock for First Mississippi National stock. The Bank of Mississippi, based in Tupelo, will be the survivor, making it the state's fourth-largest, with about $1.1 billion in assets.

The Bank of Mississippi will pav about 1.5 times the book value oi First Mississippi National about $30 million based on Bank of Mississippi's $42 closing price on Wednesday. "This figure came as a recommendation from our analysts and, when you figure price-to-earnings ratios and other factors, that's the price they got. It was agreeable to everyone," said Harry Baxter, Bank of Mississippi senior vice president. Majority shareholder approval from both banks is needed. Regulators must also approve.

The banks said the marger should be complete before year's end.
