Survivors include wife Georgia; a people 20-20 vision is restored through lenses United Press International ORLANDO An Orlando optometrist has restored a 20-year-old patient's blurred 20-100 vision to 20-20 by just using contact lenses. Through a little-known procedure called orthokeratology, Dr. Allen I. Sobel flattened the contour of the nearsighted man's eye, moving its focal point back to the proper place in slightly more than one month.

THE PROCEDURE uses contact lenses to put pressure on the cornea to slowly change the eye's shape, just as braces correct the position of teeth. Sobel said the procedure is not for everyone. He has used it on six patients in the past five years and says only one "was a total washout" because of a complication called cornea insult, in which the cornea becomes starved for oxygen under the contact lens. He said the ideal patient for orthokeratology is between 16 and 38 years old with at least 9 years' experience wearing contact lenses. Sobel used three pairs of contact lenses on his most recent patient, a University of Florida student who wanted to be free of lenses so he could play sports.

"He didn't want to wear contacts any more," Sobel said. "When I presented the idea of orthokeratology to him, he jumped at THE LENSES WERE manufactured from a permeable material recently approved for use in the United States by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The new material allows oxygen to penetrate the lens while it exerts pressure, reducing the possibilities of cornea insult. Sobel said he first noticed the side effect of contact lenses on his patients' eyes seven years ago.

"Contact lens patients would come in, and I would notice a change." he said. "That was the tipoff." He recorded the changes and noticed a trend. "The procedure has been done all over the United States, but with limited success," Sobel said. "I expect that success will be greater now that the new materials are available to us and cornea insult becomes less of a problem." "We have to change a structure that the body wants to grow," Sobel said. "It's like making your arm shorter.

It's extremely hard to do. Only in the last eight years have doctors had moderate success with it."
