PAGE C4 Home News Tribune SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2000 COLLEGE FOOTBALL BOSTON COLLEGE 20, SYRACUSE 13 AROUND THE NATION Eagles pick off Orangemen N.J. ROUNDUP Princeton freshman passes test for Pat Woodcock. He returned the interception 29 yards for a touchdown 1:30 into the second quar ter. Shafer's 27-yard field goal made it 13-6 at half-time, but BC went ahead 20-6 on a 6-yard run by William Green, who rushed for 104 yards, with 9:37 gone in the third Nunes' 20-yard completion to Aaron Lewis, cutting the lead to 20-13 with 56 seconds left in the third quarter. The Orangemen had four more possessions, but BC held them to two first downs and Mike Shafer's missed 34-yard field-goal attempt.

Syracuse got 155 yards rushing from James Mun-gro and 105 from Dee Brown, who passed Jim Brown's total of 2,091 yards rushing to move into 11th place in school history with 2,125. But Nunes, who entered the game third in the nation in passing efficiency, couldn't match his previous two performances in wins over Brig- ham Young and Pittsburgh when he completed 30 of 40 passes for 507 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. On Saturday, he threw interceptions on three of Syracuse's last four series of the first half and the first series of the second. He completed 9 of 22 passes for 134 yards. BC beat Syracuse for the second straight year after losing four in a row.

Since 1987, the team that won each annual matchup has gone to a bowl game. The Eagles were leading 6-3 when Walls, playing right cornerback, read Nunes perfectly and stepped in front of a pass quarter. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BOSTON Lenny Walls scored on one of four interceptions thrown by Syracuse's Troy Nunes, and Boston College's defense stopped a second-half comeback attempt for a 20-13 win yesterday. It was a critical victory for Boston College (4-2, 1-2 Big East) because it had been winless in the conference. The Eagles also showed they could beat a solid team.

Their first three wins came against teams with a combined 2-14 record Army, Navy and Connecticut. Syracuse (3-3, 1-1) got its only touchdown on Each team had a big run on its first possession but settled for field goals. BC's Mike Sutphin kicked a 19-yarder after a 65-yard run by Green, and Shafer connected from 24 yards after a 70-yard gain by Mungro. Ralph Parent had two interceptions for BC and Sean Guthrie had one. TOP 25 ROUNDUP THE ASSOCIATED PRESS If the significance of being the first freshman quarterback to start a game in 132 years of Princeton football put pressure on Dave Splithoff it never showed.

"It's something cool to say you did, but when you get out there, to me there is no age difference," said Splithoff, who completed 13 of 17 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers 55-28 victory over Brown yesterday. "You're a team and you're going out there to play football. You're going to line up against the other team and show what you can do." Splithoff will get another chance against Harvard next Saturday, regardless of whether Jon Blevins is recovered from a sprained ankle suffered last week against Colgate. Splithoff showed the ability to escape trouble and find open receivers on the run as Princeton scored five touchdowns on plays of 47 yards or more. Princeton (2-3, 2-0 Ivy League) had 514 yards of offense and recorded its highest point total since a 59-37 win over Brown in 1991.

The Tigers held Brown (3-2, 0-2), who led the Ivy League in total offense, to 68 rushing yards and also forced five turnovers. Splithoff began the season as the third-string quarterback, but was forced to start when Blevins' ankle did not heal. First-stringer Tommy Crenshaw is out for the season with a broken wrist. Princeton expanded a 10-point halftime lead in the third quarter on a 47-yard touchdown run by Cameron Atkinson and a 40-yard field goal by Taylor Northrop to make it 34-14. Brown cut it to 34-21 when quarterback Kyle Rowley, who took over for Ivv Dassine leader Eric EAST: Rashad Bartholomew rushed 27 times for 1 85 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner, as Yale rallied to beat Fordham 24-17.

Bartholomew's 3-yard scoring run at 4:30 of the fourth quarter gave Yale the lead for good, 21-17. Mike Murawczyk's 31 -yard field goal with just over three minutes remaining completed the scoring. Bartholomew also scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, while Peter Lee connected on 1 8 of 31 passes for 218 yards and one touchdown for the Bulldogs (4-1), who won their third straight Nchendia Pajong capped a 16-play drive with a 4-yard scoring run with 4:24 remaining, leading Rhode Island to its first win of the season, 7-6 over James Madison. Hoffman, who now has thrown for 1 1 touchdowns this season, completed 19 of 26 for 236 yards.
