Mississippi State's Joel Logan is proof. The senior placekicker booted a 41-yard field goal with 3:01 to play Saturday night to lift Mississippi State to a 13-10 victory over Southern Mississippi in what may have been the last game in the storied intrastate series. It was the second straight year that Logan provided the late winning field goal. "I got the tape of last year's kick out last night and watched it 150 times. I lay in bed and dreamed of the opportunity to do it again," said Logan, whose 34-yard field goal with four seconds to play was the margin of victory a year ago in a 26-23 State victory at Hattiesburg.

"Just like last year, everything was perfect the snap, the hold and the kick." "We moved the football a lot better than I thought we would. We gave them problems running the ball, passing it and kept them off balance," said State Coach Rockey Felker, whose club rolled up 357 yards offense to Southern's 224. "Nobody gave us credit to be able to go out and win this game," Felker said. "It gives us a lot of satisfaction to beat a good football team like Southern. This one couldn't have come at a better time for us." In winning for only the second time in the last six meetings, State improved to 2-1 on the season, while Southern, which upset Alabama two weeks ago, fell to 2-2.

Southern leads the series 14-12-1. Logan's winning field goal capped a 56-yard, nine-play drive that took a little over four minutes. David Fair ran for 35 yards in five carries and twice got key first downs. Southern roared back, driving to the State 30-yardline after the ensuing kickoff, but Jim Taylor's 47-yard field goal with 1:15 to play was wide left. State then ran out the clock.

"It's tough to lose them like that. It's tough to lose any but it's even tougher to lose to your big rival," said Southern quarterback Brett Favre. "We had the opportunity to win the game but didn't." The series, which dates back to Miss. State tailback Tony James (25) gets tackled by USM cornerback Simmle Carter in first quarter action of Saturday's game in Starkville 1935, has been played continuously since 1975 but State a member of the Southeastern Conference has not moved to continue it beyond this season against independent Southern. And if it was the final game, a near-sellout crowd of 41,115 saw Rebs turn back Hogs a classic particularly if they liked defense and big plays.

Logan's field goal was the only points of a defensive final 30 minutes. "This was a good, solid game the type of game I thought it would be," said Southern Coach Curley Hallman. "I thought it "That running back had that look in his eye but I knew if we could slow him down someone could tackle him," Godwin said. "I didn't see Chris make the hit but I sure heard it." "I heard some guy say it was over and a ref say no touchdown," Dickerson said. "I really didn't know what had happened.

Everything was in slow motion. It was like I could feel the seconds ticking off the clock." Thomas ran' 13 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and Vincent Brownlee produced two long-range scores for Mississippi (2-1), which came from behind twice. Brownlee's 25-yard catch of a Tom Luke pass and his 89-yard punt return during a 2 -minute span in the second quarter put the Rebels in front 14-6. After Arkansas had gone ahead 17-14, Thomas scored to put the Rebels ahead to stay with 13:45 left in the game. State countered late in the quarter with an eight-play, 56-yard drive capped by Sleepy Robinson's 1-yard touchdown pass to Treddis Anderson for the tie. 21-17 since 1987 and was flagged for the spearing penalty. Baxter averaged 28 yards a kick. Mississippi's Charles Childers averaged 38.8, including a 52-yarder with slightly more than a minute remaining. Grovey, the key to Arkansas' offense, was under constant pressure from Kelvin Pritchett, Phillip Kent and others.

Mississippi scored its first touchdown two plays after Baxter's punt went out of bounds on the Arkansas 25. Brownlee was a step in the clear and Luke laid the ball just over Michael James' outstretched hand. Arkansas quickly gained mid-field but wound up punting. Baxter's 33-yard punt was fielded by Brownlee on the 11. He headed up the middle and a couple of players slapped at him but nobody got a clean shot and he was free for the final 50 yards.

In the first half, Arkansas managed three Todd Wright field goals after first downs at the Mississippi 2, 10, 20 and 4. down and went for 46 yards. Hercules Gray scored on a 10-yard pass from Dempsey. Alan Balch led the Texas team in rushing with 72 total yards. The leading quarterback was Mike Hinton, who was five of 13 with two interceptions and two touchdowns for 68 total yards.

For the second straight week, Millsaps' defense allowed less than 150 total yards. Trinity had 106 total yards and minus one the second half. Millsaps improved its record to 1-2, and Trinity fell to 0-3. Mississippi Col. 44, 14: Fred McAfee ran wild in a 44-14 Mississippi College splattering of Tennessee-Martin.

The Choctaw's senior running back poured across four touchdowns in piling up 212 yards on 14 carries as MC moved to 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference and 2-1 overall. The four scores put McAfee into the MC record book, tying 1969 and 1989 records. As welcome as all four scores were, the big one came with one second left in the first half. UT-M had battled back to within 17-14 of the Choctaws with 25 seconds remaining on a 2-yard keeper by Leonard Williams. After a holding penalty on the ensuing kickoff pushed MC back to its 28, McAfee broke loose on a 72-yard romp that essentially finished off the Pacers.

Logan's 43-yard field goal and Taylor's 52-yarder forged a 3-3 tie as each team scored on its opening possession. Kerry Valrie's 46-yard pass interception return his fourth in run that gave Arkansas a 15-14 lead, and his two-point conversion extended the lead to three. The Rebels didn't make a first down in three third-quarter possessions, but a 29-yard punt coupled with a spearing penalty put them in business at the Arkansas 34. Luke's toss to Randy Baldwin in the right flat produced 21 yards and then Thomas went straight up the middle. Arkansas, which had won five in a row over Mississippi, will leave the Southwest Conference and join Mississippi in the Southeastern Conference in 1992.

Arkansas dominated many of the statistical categories, but the Rebels had a huge advantage in the kicking game. A 17-yard punt by John Baxter led to the Rebels' first touchdown and an 8-yard punt cost the Razorbacks a chance to pin the Rebels deep midway through the fourth quarter. Arkansas' punt-coverage team gave up a return for a touchdown for the first time team and two game officials left the playing field. After a five-minute discussion among the officials, the game was ruled complete, giving UNA its third win in four tries and evening their GSC record at 1-1. Delta State fell to 1-2 and 0-1 in the conference.

The Stepp field goal overcame a 13-12 Delta State advantage after the Statesmen had scored on a 17-yard guard-around play by Marty Bray with 14:44. DSU's first score came when quarterback Kenny Taylor passed 29 yards to tight end James Wright with 1:29 left in the first half. North Alabama opened the scoring as Lions' quarterback Craig Bryant tossed a 38-yard TD pass to split end Lawrence Haynes with 12:47 remaining in the second period. Stepp's point after missed to the right. He booted a 43-yard field goal with 1 second left in the half to give UNA a 9-7 advantage.

Millsaps 45, Trinity 14: Running back Buddy Bass contributed three touchdowns on the ground to the Millsaps Majors' 45-14 victory Saturday over the Trinity Tigers. Bass scored from 14 yards out once and twice from one yard out and had 73 total yards rushing. Fullback Richard Chandler also had 73 yards rushing. His out-of-the-blue tackle on running back Ron Dickerson at the Rebels' 1-yard line on the final play of the game preserved Mississippi's 21-17 victory over 13th-ranked Arkansas on Saturday. "We thought that, (Quinn) Grovey had a dive option; pass and we knew he would probably keep it or pitch," Mitchell said. "Chauncey (Godwin) turned Dickerson around and I came up hard just trying to keep him out of the end zone. "It hurt, it hurt bad. But when they woke me up they said we won the game." The play started at the Mississippi 5 with 12 seconds remaining and Arkansas (1-1) out of timeouts.

Grovey headed left and pitched to Dickerson, who was hit low by Godwin. Dickerson lunged for the end zone when Mitchell sent him spinning. (AP) -James Johnson rushed for 137 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead Jackson State to a 57-34 victory over Mississippi Valley State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Saturday night. Jackson State opened its conference schedule with a victory, while upping its record to 3-1 overall. Mississippi Valley State falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Johnson scored two first-quarter touchdowns on runs of 1 and 24 yards to put Jackson State in front 14-0 after one quarter.

After an Ike Ayozie 47-yard field goal, which put Jackson State up by 17 points, Mississippi Valley rallied behind reserve quarterback Darryl Cox. Cox passed for three second-quarter touchdowns to bring Mississippi Valley within four points at 24-20 at the half. Johnson scored on three short runs in the second half as Jackson State pulled away with its fifth straight victory over Mississippi Valley. N. Alabama 15, Delta State 13: Brad Stepp's 34-yard field goal with 2:08 left gave the University of North Alabama a 15-13 Gulf South Conference football victory over 20th-ranked Delta State on Saturday night.

The game ended with Delta State at the Lions' 16-yard line as time expired with an injured player on the field. Delta State thought it had another play even though no time remained on the clock. But the North Alabama NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -Now when Watson Brown says the wishbone is the way for Vanderbilt to compete in the Southeastern Conference, people may listen. LSU choked on the Commodores' wishbone Saturday, falling 24-21 after a last-second offensive pass interference call in the end zone took away what appeared to be the winning points.

"I've never worked a team harder than I worked this team the past two weeks," said Brown, whose Commodores dropped a disheartening 44-7 decision to SMU in their opener. "They stayed together. I said after the SMU game that 'we're not this It was a team deal. The offense kept us in the game, and the defense won it," Brown The Commodores (1-1, 1-0) never punted and gained 343 yards on 65 running plays, the most for Vandy since Brown took over the program in 1986. Leading the Vandy victory was sophomore quarterback Marcus Wilson, whose 4-yard touchdown run with 69 seconds remaining pushed the Commodores into a 24-21 edge.

The victory allowed Vanderbilt to snap a 10-game losing streak and put LSU, 2-1 overall, 1-1 in the SEC. Wilson gained 136 yards on 29 carries as he turned in a near flawless performance in guiding the Vanderbilt offense. Wilson gave way to backup Mike Healey after LSU had grabbed a 21-17 lead on a 16-yard run by Odell Beckham with 3:34 left. Healey connected on four of six passes as he took the Commodores from their own 21-yard line to the LSU 17. Healey gave Vandy a first down at the Tiger 4 when he was flushed from the pocket, found an opening on the right side and put up a 13-yard gain.

Wilson returned to the field and promptly faked to Carlos Thomas off right tackle and followed his fullback into the end zone to push the Commodores on top 24-21. "I knew something big was going to happen. I knew the offensive line was going to blow them out," Wilson said of his game-winning run. "This is real big. We needed a confidence builder." LSU came right back, moving from its own 8 to the Commodore 42.

On fourth-and-10 from the 42, freshman Chad Loup lofted a "Hail Mary" pass for split end Todd Kinchen that Kinchen hauled in between a pair of Vanderbilt defenders..
