Decorafions For Mrs. Heckel, Madonna Collage By SHIRLEY O'CONNOR Journal-Standard Reporter Anyone can make lovely Christmas decorations for the home or for gifts if they know the mechanics and the little tricks that it takes to assemble them. This is the idea promoted by Mrs. E. J.

Heckel, who shared her know-how with Freeport Woman's Club Saturday afternoon in Masonic Temple ballroom. She gave the same program last week for members of the Civic Garden Club. For Fresh Greens Mrs. Heckel began with the first step, the treating of greens so they will stay fresh looking for several weeks. She explained that you first smash the stems and then put them in a solution of 1 quart warm water, one-half cup of corn syrup, 1 teaspoon liquid bleach and 1 teaspoon Green Guard (micronized iron for soil).

Fresh boxwood is the only green treated differently: She soaks it overnight in water and then stores it in a plastic bag in a cool place. To make wreaths, Mrs. Heckel suggested an ordinary coat hanger, bent into a circle, or for a spray it can be bent into a narrow oval. She stressed cutting greens into short lengths and attaching them with strong wire pulled tightly. She said she uses plastic coated velvet ribbon to make bows, three yards per bow.

The important thing is to loop the ribbon and then pinch it, then secure with wire pulled tight before making the next loop. Artichokes, when spread apart and dried, make beautiful adornments for wreaths, she suggested. She puts small tissue paper balls between the petals for about 10 days to dry them. Madonna Collage Mrs. Heckel presented many ingenious ideas, such as an old frame painted gold in Freeport (III.) Journal-Standard Dec.

She sprayed a ham can gold, framed it with greens and placed a creche inside for a tin can grotto. For the back door she used a copper dust pan, using the pocket to hold greens and a perky Santa. A red plastic bow went on the handle.

To set off a favorite figurine, she made an arch of coat hanger wire, attached greens and anchored it in a styrofoam base covered with velvet ribbon. Mrs. Heckel explained a time-saving idea for large parties, when the decorations are needed for only a couple of hours. She stuck greens and any other decorations into loaves of rye bread so there is no need to worry about similar containers for a number of tables. Practical Ideas The number of ideas which Mrs.

Heckel presented was quite large and the materials she used were basic, inexpensive items, so as to make her ideas readily adaptable.
