If; l-D St. Petersburg Times, Tuesday, March 27, 1973 A 'Kicky' Scary Movie ui 'iJJrW" if MacDonald's Career Is Just Unfolding prescott on film i By J. OLIVER TRESCOTT Tlmi Drama Critic Fouke, is "a right pleasant place to live until the sun goes down." Around' about dusk, a seven-foot thing covtred with hair and walking on two three-toed feet galumphs out of the very boggy Boggy Creek and scares the living heck out of Fouke folk. It isn't exactly kind of him (or it) to fret people so. But then he (or it) doesn't exactly have cause for joie de vivre.

THE FOUKE monster, so "The- Legend of Boggy Creek" (now packing in the audiences at Plaza II) tells us, is a one-of-a-kind bachelor who has a terrifyingly lonely scream and who gets shot at frequently. It differs from other such legendary monsters as Bigfoot or the Abominable Snowman or Yetti in that it has only three pedal digits and a smaller foot. But it 'is like these other kicky "scary" movie. The kids see through all the awful acting and seem to love being made to scream and excitedly jump about whenever the monster (unfortunately made up here to look like a flea? bitten gorilla in a limp fright wig) appears. Plaza II.

Rated G. MINI-REVIEW. that all-too-expected, hairy hand to reach out for someone's throat and then hitting the audience with action when it least expects it. The film begins with some intriguing and moody cinematography of the gnarled trees and eerie bramble that grow in the' Arkansas bottoms. But soon the camera loses its focus and selectivity.

It looks at anything often aimlessly. And the film slows down and drags. The acting if one can call it that is amusingly attempted by a cast of non-actors. Most of the people who appear in the film are actual' residents of Fouke, and some of them actually confronted the monster on occasion. Mm I i -5 A jj 1 1 -vfr, in I and other Broadway plays.

MacDonald also participates in a weekly theatre workshop In California, where he lives. He was visiting his sisters in Clearwater. His plans now are open. "There's nothing happening in Hollywood right now because the Screen Writer's Guild is on strike. And it's the seasonal hiatus.

The current network shows are through taping and they won't begin the new ones until the end of June or July. All of the experiences MacDonald mentions looking into ads, prime time series work, movies, being host on a game show involve acting. "The image is what you try to project. You push a button in your head and the quality comes from within. You can choose.

"The secret is survival in this business. You end up doing a lot of different things." The centerfold in the glossy "Playgirl" is a different thing. When Burt Reynolds showed almost all for "Cosmopolitan" it seemed to take attention' away from his strong acting in "Deliverance" and his work with Easter Seal. But, MacDonald isn't worried about the after effects. He seems to hope the centerfold will draw attention.

"You've got to take what comes. If it can get me better jobs and better roles, why not?" "I have my own sense of morality. There are a lot of things that society considers fine, that I consider immoral. I just lead my own life." Trying tq discern how complete the centerfold would be, I said to MacDonald, "There's no tactful way to ask, but And he laughed and said "no." By ERICA MEYER Timet Teltvlilon Writer If you have been searching for an object of romantic fantasy, allow me to recommend Ryan MacDonald who was in Clearwater, Friday. To make it easy, you'll have a nice sized picture to fancy as soon as "Playgirl" comes out with MacDonald in the centerfold, in the buff.

TO MAKE IT appealing, MacDonald is casually good looking and very friendly. He doesn't sit back and answer questions in an interview. He makes it a conversation. He also has a sense of humor, if you like spice in your fantasies. MacDonald spent the last year and a half portraying Scott Banning on the soap opera "Days of Our Lives." He knew when he.

took the job that the character would eventually be killed off. The writers told him about the steel beam that would fall on Scott's head about six weeks ago. He refers to that as "the dead Scott decision." "Days of Our Lives (Channel 8, 2 p.m.) is the fourth soap opera MacDonald has worked with. His last continuing role was Paul Britton In "The Secret Storm." MacDonald feels that "Days of Our Lives" 'was "good to me" and says it was "the pleas-antest work experience I've had." HIS EXPERIENCE includes working with Maggie Smith on the London stage and performing in "Mary, Mary," "Any Wednesday" The symbol used above indicates there is violence in "The Legend of Boggy Creek." FAMOUS RESTAURANT much discussed, rarely-seerr monsters in that It arouses some sympathy, but more cu- riosity and ever greater fear and superstitious frenzy. Pierce does quite well at capturing the fear and superstition. The director knows how his audience by making it wait and wait and wait for The narration is written and performed with a kind of textbook simplicity. The orchestrated music is effective, but the two songs that interrupt the flow of the film are whiney and ridiculous. It is a movie that doesn't bear too much scrutiny. Instead, he should play a low diamond, allowing South to win a trick with the queen of diamonds. This doesn't give up "anything. Declarer is entitled to one diamond trick, either with his own queen or with dummy's jack.

The important point is that West must wait until he is ready to take the rest of his long suit. Sooner or later, South must try the club finesse, and East wins with the king. Now East can return his last diamond, and West can take the king. West then sets the contract by taking two more diamonds. The principle of giving up an -early trick in a suit works just as well for the defense as for the declarer.

Bridge detectives are invited to inspect today's hand. The crime that is soon to be described should be spotted at once even if you've left your magnifying glass and blood-; hounds in your other suit. West opened the three of diamonds, and East won with the ace. East returned the seven of diamonds, and West won with the king. A third diamond went to dummy's jack.

South now got to his hand with the ace of spades to try the club finesse. East took the king of clubs and returned the queen of hearts. South took the rest of the tricks with top cards and the long club suit, making his contract with an extra trick. Who went wrong? Decide for yourself before you read on. SOUTH 4 A8 tfA742 0 Q9 4.
