1 'i C2 TIIE HOME NEWS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1994 LIVING ARTS MTV: Hopes Roseanne can stir up music video awards show Dogg and New Jersey rock superstar Bruce Springsteen who makes his first-ever appearance on a televised music awards show. Celebrity presenters include Cindy "House of Style" Crawford, comedian Adam Sandler and actress Sandra Bullock. In addition to the regular awards, the Rolling Stones will receive a Special Recognition Award for setting the standard of rock 'n' roll excellence (sounds like an excuse to get the old fogeys off their current tour and in front of MTV cameras, to me) and Tom Petty will be honored with the 1994 Video Vanguard Award. Continued from page CI awards slums like the Grammys, tonight's 11th annual MTV Video Music Awards provides a much-needed promotional shot in the arm for the cliannel thanks mostly to new host Roseanne and a move to New York City after eight years in Los Angeles. Broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall, the 8 p.m.

show features a record 13 live performances, including such august award nominees as Green Day, Stone Temple Pilots, Snoop Doggy MTV executives seem to be counting on the edgy, irreverent style of Roseanne (once Arnold andor Barr, now liberated from last names thanks to impending divorce proceedings), to rescue the show from the kind of bland posturing that marked the tenures of recent hosts like Dana Carvey and Christian (my smile is plastered on like cheap wallpaper) Slater. But it remains to be seen how well the willful and spontaneous comedian will deal with something so scripted and canned as an awards ceremony even one presented by MTV. Officials at the music channel, of course, are upbeat. "In Roseanne, we could not have found a host who more perfectly embodies the spirit and attitude of MTV," said Doug Herzog, MTV's senior vice president of programming. "We're thrilled to have the awards back in New York." Already the Big Apple's hype machine has kicked in for tonight's broadcast starting with a July press conference hosted by New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and continuing with banners hung from Times Square streetlights and a huge, painted MTV logo adorning the street in front of the midtown Manhattan venue. "It became such an 'LA. thing' over the last couple of years, we didn't really hear from anybody in New York," Herzog told Tribune Media Services in a recent story. "(In New York), the vibe of the show will be different, both on and off the stage, in the flavor and the attitude," he continued, citing a planned tribute to rap music as proof.

"That's something that appeals to us, especially as it relates to the Video Music Awards, which we're always trying to keep fresh and new and exciting." Besides a superstar host and new venue, MTV executives have also shaken up the award process itself. Though industry honchos chose the nominees in all 22 categories, organizers also chose 500 MTV viewers to join an equal number of music business professionals in voting for winners in .11 awards including Best Video of the Year, Best Rap Video and Best New Artist Video. (Industry voters still pick winners for technical stuff like Best Editing and Best Direction). The most nominated artists include Aerosmith (8), R.E.M.(5), Bjork (6) and the Beastie Boys (4), but the audience contingent ensures that it's anyone's guess who'll walk away with what awards. This critic's picks include Springsteen's sparse lament "Streets of Philadelphia" (Best Video From a Film); Green Day's punky, in-your-face "Longview" (Best New Artist Video), the loping Soundgarden clip "Black Hole MAKERS RACKS DECORATIVE YET FUNCTIONAL Use it Cookware Collectibles 1 I I FAME I JLML'i Microwave TV Books Plants Ahaim, 230 Denison Highland Park, for its afternoon Hebrew School program.
