i THE HOME NEWS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1994 B3 COLLEGE FOOTBALL Columbia routs Yale Princeton shuts down Harvard behind QB Schwalde The Associated Press Quarterback Jamie Schwalde completed 20 of 28 passes for By JOHN BRUNS Special to The Home News PRINCETON With a big boost from an opportunistic defense, Princeton continued to show its prowess as a second-half i'ootball team yesterday. The Tigers scored 1 1 points in the fourth period to record an 18-7 Ivy League victory over Harvard before 15,143 fans at sunny i05 yards, giving Columbia its most lopsided victory ever against Yale in a 30-9 Ivy League win yes terday at Yale Bowl in New Haven, Conn. Schwalde's 19-yard touchdown pass to David Ramirez gave the Palmer Stadium. It was Columbia's first defeat of play because kicker Buckman thought the fake was on and cleared out. With the score tied at 7-7 early in the third period, it was Harvard that almost capitalized on a turnover to score a go-ahead touchdown. Nakielny turned the wrong way on a handoff to Brucato and lost the ball with DE Mike Kent recovering for Harvard at the PU 42. The Crimson was on the threshold of scoring after quarterback Vin Ferrara of Florham Park and Delbarton Prep completed a 22-yard pass to tight end Matt Gar-gulinski at the Princeton 3- Harvard coach Tim Murphy, looking to cross up the Tigers, went to air again, but Ludwig intercepted in the end zone and Princeton dodged the bullet. "I thought that was the turning point right there," Tosches said.

Murphy seemed to agree. "If we go in, who knows where the momentum goes at 1 4-7," he said. The teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter, Harvard getting on the board first when Hu scored from the 3 after Ferrara completed a 36-yard pass to split end Colby Skelton. Princeton answered with three minutes left in the half when Jordan swept the right side from the 1 on a third-down play after the Tigers had a first down at that yard line. Princeton's bid to take the lead before the half was thwarted when Buckman's 22-yard field goal try on the final play was blocked by cornerback David St.

Yale ropped to 3-3, 1-2. The Elis played the first half ithout starting quarterback Chris etherington. Hetherington, who njured his hip last week, replaced The Associated Press 25 on the first occasion, and McCuIlough later was stopped a yard shy of the marker on a fourth-down scramble. The victory was Penn's 17th straight, the longest current streak in Division I-AA. Penn has won 10 of its last 1 1 against Brown.

CORNELL 17, DARTMOUTH 14 In Ithaca, N.Y., Aaron Berryman caught a 14-yard scoring pass from Per Larson with only 49 seconds remaining as unbeaten Cornell rallied to defeat Dartmouth and stay even with Penn atop the Ivy League. Berryman's catch capped a 97-yard, 10-pIay drive that took only 2:30. It gave the Big Red (6-0, 3-0 Ivy) its first 6-0 start since 1971. Cornell's Chad Levitt had five carries for, 46 yards on the winning drive. Levitt, the leading rusher in the Ivy League, finished with 172 yards on 32 carries, his fourth straight 1 00-yard game.

Dartmouth (3-3, 1-2), leading 14-10, almost put the game away early in the fourth quarter. Jerry Singleton hit Andre Grant with a 50-yard pass, but Cornell's Nicholas Bombach stripped the ball and Doug Knopp recovered at the Cornell 3. The Big Red gained a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. John Rodin opened the scoring with a 39-yard field goal. Cornell got the ball right back when Pete Oberle fumbled and Chris Hanson recovered at the Dartmouth 46.

Ned Burke scored on a 4-yard run two plays later. Dartmouth staged a rally of its own in the fourth quarter behind Singleton, who was 24-for-30 for 259 yards and two touchdowns. Early in the fourth, he combined with Brian Merritt on a 4-yard touchdown pass. Dartmouth capitalized on a Levitt fumble moments later. Hunter Buckner recovered and ran the ball to the Cornell 3, and Singleton found David Shearer in the corner of the end zone three plays later to give the Big Green the lead with 11:30 left.

Freshman free safety Tom Ludwig, on fourth team at the beginning of the season, became the first Princeton player since 1988 to intercept three passes in a game as the stingy Tiger defense, which has allowed only one second-half touchdown this season and is ranked third nationally in Division I-AA, continually thwarted the Harvard offense. Offensively, Princeton got a two-touchdown effort from senior tailback Bill Jordan, who rushed for 120 yards on 29 carries, his second straight 100-yard game and the fourth this season for the Tigers who also have two from alternate tailback Marc Washington. Sophomore quarterback Harry Nakielny of Sayreville, in his second start, was a poised field general, completing 15 of 27 passes for 188 yards. "Harry is making the plays, and he's cool under fire," Princeton coach Steve Tosches said. "More times than not we revert back to old-time football.

With that offensive line, the pair of fullbacks, the pair of running backs, we're more than happy just to pound away." The Tigers ran the ball 63 times for 233 yards. "We have great running backs, obviously, and a great line to block for them, so a good mixture of pass and run is going to keep the defense off balance all the time," Nakielny said. In addition to Ludwig's three interceptions, the Tigers forced and recovered two Harvard fumbles, one on which was turned into the PENN 24, BROWN 0 field goal by go-ahead 21 -yard Brian Buckman. The Tigers appeared headed for another score after the second of Ludwig's interceptions early in the fourth period. Nakielny's pass for 8 yards to fullback C.J. Brucato gave the Tigers a first down at the Harvard 10, but Jordan lost a fumble (the Tigers lost three) on first down.

Jordan redeemed himself by scoring an insurance touchdown on a neat 17-yard run with 3:34 remaining. The Tigers finished the scoring with a bizarre touch after the Jordan touchdown as holder Brett Budzinski ran for the two-point conversion on what Tosches said was not a fake kick but a busted Comp-Att-Int Sacked-Yards Penn yielded just 45 yards in Ludwig, who chose Princeton over Harvard, said, "No matter which 11 players it is, this defense is going to be tough. The coaches are confident whichever 11 players it is, they're going to come from Princeton, and they're going to play like a Princeton defense. They're just going to play tough." The Tigers had a tough time containing Harvard's dynamic sophomore tailback Eion Hu of Ringwood, who was the leading rusher in the game with 1 26 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. But it was tackle Brian Groody's recovery of an Hu fumble late in the third period that led to Buck-man's field goal which came 1:36 into the fourth period.
