Inscriptions on the older ones Have become almost effaced And with only greatest patience Can the words and dates be traced. Upon those stones the reader sees -In the dimly-dated lines -Death's greatest toll of younger folks In those less-enlightened times; The old weather-worn inscriptions To observers plainly say That more cases then were fatal Than in sickness of today. In those old inscriptions, also, The discerning person finds That pathetic revelations Are embodied in the lines; Often telling that a Mother Young, and almost still a bride, Entered into sleep eternal For the infant bv her side. At places, too, perhaps forgotten Graves with fallen stones are found, Also some at which there's only Myrtle-covered sunken ground. It is there that often persons May be lowered head While addressing words of pity To the never-hearing dead.

Though distressing tales of sorrow May be found upon the stones, And tis seen that death disrupted Many former happy homes; There's no story that's so touching To the tender human heart As the one that's ever present At the grave that has no mark --H.
