Also there for dinner were Mr and Airs' Les ter Jacobsen and children. The occasion was Hay's birthday an nlversary. -For her guests last Saturday, Mrs Win. J. Lewis entertained Mrs Faye Esdon and Mrs John Nicolson, both of Shenandoah.

Burdeite Thomson is at the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs Ralph Thomson, following his recent discharge in Hutehinson, Kansas, from the U. S. Navy, During his four years of service, Burdette was stationed years in Guam. He is at present taking a correspondence course in civil aeronautics. He will go to Kansas City, to complete his course later.

The Rev. and Mrs Lyle Paulsen announce the birth of a 7 Ib. 11 daughter. Ann Carol, at me Memorial Hopital Sunday. February 12.

This makes a family of five for the Paulsen's, three boys and two girls. Mrs Win. Fritz and Mrs Frances Goodner attended the American Legion Auxiliary, department of Iowa, mid-year conference at the Fort Des tMoines Hotel in Des Moines Sunday and Monday. Mrs Fritz and Mrs Ooodner, president and secretary, respectively, were delegates from the local unit. They report a very fine and well attended meeting from which they gained rnutih ot" interest to bring hack with them.

The Rev. and Mrs Paul McGee are parents of a baby daughter at Myrtue Memorial Hospital Tuesday, Fenr. 14. She tipped the scales at 7 ibs. 15 and has been named Janis Coleen.

Mr and Mrs Jjouis Picoalo. Mr Wrn. Leppley and Miss' Pat Quinlin, all of Omaha. Mr is a brother of Mrs Donlin. Mr and Mrs Gerald Larson and the former's parents.

Mr and Mrs Edgar E. Larson, returned last Sunday evening from a three weeks vacation in Arizona. The 1-arson's were located in Mesa. Arizona, during- their stay, but took numerous trips out from there and saw a lot of the country. Nelson G.

Kraschel is in Clarkson Hospital in Omaha for observation and treatment. Mr Kraschel suffered a severe nosebleed last Sunday afternoon. He was first treated at Myrtue Memorial Hospital and given a blood transfusion. His son, Frederick, came out from Omaha that evening and took his lather to the Clarksou Hospital at 4 o'clock morning- His condition is reported as satisfactory. 'M and rs Don Woodhouse and son, Michael, of Iowa City, spent the weekend with the former's parents, Mr and Mrs G.

J. Woodhouse. When they returned Monday morning, they were accompanied by Don's sister, Mrs Dennis Hoffnagle and son "Chuck" ot Tennant, who are their guests for a week. Marion Harlan left Tuesday to drive to Excelsior Springs, to see Mrs Harlau. who has been under the care since she went to the resort ten days ago with Mrs S.

C. Dedrick and Mrs Agnes Baroch for a vacation. Mr Harlan got only as far as Clarinda when he had car trouble and had to come back. 'Mrs J. W.

Saylor returned home from Myrtue Memorial Hospital Wednesday, where she had heen a medical patient after she came ill last Saturday. She is much improved. 'Mrs Dale Thorngren, secretary of student work for the Iowa- Des Moines Conference of W.S.C.S.. will attend the annual conference of the Methodist Student Movement to be held at the 4-H camp at Boone on February 17-18-19. Methodist students from many Iowa colleges will be in attendance.

Dr. Robt. E. Jensen, local optometrist, was speaker at the Irwin-Kirkman PTA meeting in Irwjn Thursday evening. Dr.

Jensen took for his subject "Visual Screening in the Schools," Mr and Mrs Blmer Xorgaand. daughter Xorene, and son. John, drove to Omaha Sunday to have dinner and to meet the former's mother, Mrs J. J. Sforgaard, and Mrs A.

L. Lohry, the latter of Sioux City, upon their return from a Florida vacation. Enroute to their destination, the' ladies spent several days in New Orleans arid in Biloxi then continued on to Florida, During their stay, they were at Ocala arid Lake Wales, taking numerous trips out from there. The occasion honored Mrs Olsen's birthdav. In renewing the subscription to the Harltm papers, Martin Christofferson of La Cresenta, writes that he and Mrs Martin were in quite a serious car accident last November, both receiving severe neck injuries. Both were hospitalized for three weeks and are still under the doctor's care, but are making-' a good recovery.

They are former Shelby County residents. ELK HORN BY MRS BILL HANSEN Arlie Parker was home from Ames the past weekend, coming especially to see his father, Vern Parker, vho is in Myrtue Memorial Hospital, following a heart attack three weeks ago.

Mr Parker is getting along satisfactorily, according to a report from his bedside. Mr and Mra John Scott went to Omaha Friday where Mr Scott is attending the three lowa-Xebras- ka Little National convention of dry cleaners, Mr Scott is president of the organization and is presiding over the meetings. Mrs Hay Brown departed Wednesday morning for a belated mid-winter vacation in Florida. They are making the in Florida will be at "The Wedgewood'' in Ft. Lauilerdale.

Mr and Mrs Hans Bensen of Elk Horn -will hold open house at the Baptist church on- Wednesday, February 22nd, from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary. Mrs Don Kaldenberg has concluded a ten day visit with her parents, Mr and Mrs Walter Bramer, She left on Saturday by plane from Omaha to St. Louis, Mo. to join her husband who is employed by Perpetual Research Laboratories at St. Louis.

Mr and Mrs Al Krogstad and family, Mary Petersen, and Olga Petersen of Harlan and Mr and Mrs Ed Krogstad were Sunday evening supper guests of Mr and Mrs Chester Krogstad. ft LIFE STORY OF FRANK G. HAMMES, 76 Frank G. Hammes, oldest son of Jacob and -Mary Harness, WAS born at Harper, Iowa, November 26, 1879.

He died from a heart attack at his home in Harlan, Iowa Feb. 7, 1956. His age was 76 years, two months and eleven days. He moved with his parents to Sigourney after the family home burned in Harper, and later, when he was 12 years old, family moved to Keota where he received his education. At the age of 17 he was managing his father's shoe store at Sigourney.

He married Cora B. Jones at Richland, Iowa, February 28, 1903, and the couple lived in Keota the first year of their marriage where he owned and operated a variety store. In 1904, they moved to Malvern where he assisted his father in a shoe store. In 1905, they moved to Portsmouth where he and his father went into partnership in a shoe store. He came to Harlan in 1917 where the family made their home ever since and where Mr Hammes owned and operated a shoe store in partnership with his son, Harold.

He retired from active participa tion in the store recently. Mr Hammes was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 267 and was a long time member of the Congregational church. Surviving are his wife, Cort; two sons, Forrest of Littleton, Harold of Harlan; and a daughter, Maxine, (Mrs Gerald Lewis, of Cedar Falls. Also several grandchildren, two sisters, iMfs Clara Higgins of LeMars and Helen Hammes of Terrill; and one bro ther, Leonard, of Omaha, Funeral services were held at the Pauley funeral home with the Rev.

Mrs Dale Purdum of Atlantic spent the weekend at the home of Mr and Mrs Gaylord Doonan. Marlene and Barbara Johansen were hosts to the Monroe Merrymakers Girls club Saturday afternoon at the Community center. HOME FROM HOSPITAL Arnold Petersen returned to his home Friday after being in the Myrtue hospital in Harlan since Wednesday.

Mr and 'Mrs Don Meyer attended the wedding Sunday of Eva May Crane and Dwayne Hansen at the Presbyterian church in VaiL Mr and Mrs Gaylord Doonan and Denise and Mr and Mrs Dale Doonan helped Mr and Mrs Frank Doonan celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary Thursday afternoon.
