They've already lost out on wide receiver Alvin Harper, defensive linemen Michael Dean Perry and safety James Washington, and the free agent pickings are now getting slimmer than a week-old discount rack. They still need a cornerback to replace James Hasty, as well as another safety and an experienced wide receiver. To put it mildly, the Jets have gotten off to a slow start this offseason, and even a spending spree and solid draft might not be able to undo the damage. So while the coaching staff has changed along with their free-agent philosophies, nothing at this point has developed to distinguish this group from the Same-Old-Jets.

Stephen Edelson covers the Jets for the Asbury Park Joe best among American runners competing in the event to earn the All-America honor. Dawn Mateyka (Old Bridge) and Theresa Rossi (East Bruns- wick) will be two of three seniors from Georgian Court College's women's soccer team who will participate in the NAIA Senior Bowl game in Birmingham, Ala. Georgian Court coach Joe Perri will direct the East team. Jill D'A-lessio will be the other Lion player participating. Mateyka, the team captain, had 7 goals and 4 assists from her midfield position as the Lions went 23-2-1 last fall.

Rossi had 8 goals and 8 assists. Sophomores Adam Slaninko of East Brunswick and Rob Bon-fante of Old Bridge are preparing for the upcoming outdoor track season after competing for the Rider University's indoor team. Slaninko, a graduate of St. Joseph's in Metuchen, competing in the shot put for the Broncs, setting a Northeast Conference record in the event at the conference indoor championships with a put of 49-6. Bonfante also competed in the shot, placing third in the NEC in- door meet with a put of 41-8V4.

Kristy Kalyka, a senior on the Long Island University women's Softball team out of South Plain-field, will be among the veterans counted on by the Blackbirds this season. Kalyka had a 10-9 record and 3.19 ERA for LIU last season with three wins by shutout. Scott Gleichenhaus, a freshman from South Plainfield, is a utility player for the Long Island University Blackbirds baseball team. Senior point guard Karen Robertson was directing the offense for American International University as the Yellow Jackets took on the University of Massachusetts i Lowell in the opening round of the NCAA Division II women's basketball tournament on Tuesday. Robertson set a single-season record for assists wilh 125 this 1 season and 338 for her career, averaging 4.3 per game this season.

Robertson is the lone senior on the team. The Princeton University men's squash team had five members recognized with All-America honors. Jason Jewell and Jack Wyant were selected to the first team while brothers Ed and Ben Fish-man and senior Rick Hartigan were named to the second team. If anything, the Jets now have a worse starting front four right now than the group that accounted for just IIV2 sacks a year ago, and that's saying something. Was Jeff Lageman an elite pass rushing end? Absolutely not, but he was their best hope at getting in the quarterback's face. Lageman, insulted by the teams' initial contract offer, which amounted to a pay cut, is now a Jacksonville Jaguar. That leaves them with a master plan of moving Donald Evans, last year's nose tackle, to end, inserting Alfred Ogelsby, a journeyman backup, in Evans' old postion next to eagle tackle Tony Casillas, and having Marvin Washington, who did not have a solo sack after the first game last season, or a draftee to be named later at the other end. With no free agents in the fold, it's beginning to look pretty grim.

The Jets will say they're counting on weak-side linebacker Mo Lewis, who received a lucrative extension, to have an increased role in the pass rush. But if opposing offenses don't have to key on any down linemen, they'll certainly have a few extra bodies to devote to stopping Lewis. Then there's the sad state of affairs along the offensive line. Ko-tite proclaimed that the Jets were abandoning their one-year experiment with a 49er-style offense and reverting to a power running game, promptly re-signing fullback Brad Baxter. But who else is 1111 1 lk 4.
