She sucks the souls from those who come near and stores them for future impersonations. This female Peter Sellers, self-described "social satirist" and star of her own weekly skitcom on the Fox network, has more characters on tap than Sybil has personalities. The 30-year-old Ullman also has a new movie, "I Love You to Death," inspired by Fran Toto, the Allentown, woman who on four occasions tried to have her philandering husband killed, served four years of a four-to-10-year prison sentence for her unsuccessful attempts, and ultimately was reunited with him.

In this black comedy directed by Lawrence Kasdan Big Ullman is the wife and plays it straight opposite Kevin Kline as her hubba-hubba hubby. 'We look 'orrible' The British-born actress jokes that she was hired to play the part of the neglected wife because "there weren't any American actresses who could play working-class. Here, movies have to have sexy leading ladies. It's written somewhere that women in Hollywood movies have to look like Kathleen Turner or Michelle Pfeif-fer. I'm glad that in 'I Love You to we all look 'orrible," she says, trailing into a mock-Cockney accent acting peers were still in school, she was starring in an improvisa-tional play at London's avant-garde Royal Court Theater.

In New York promoting her movie, Ullman looks glam, a punkette Chanel with a crisp white shirt and ropes of fake pearls, bright against the cropped black cardigan she wears with matching leggings and sinister, black hobnailed boots. Her inky hair is in a shaggy bob. From her hotel suite overlooking Central Park, Ullman surveys the green and asks where Shakespeare in the Park is performed during the summer.

The question is not academic. Come June, she will play Kate opposite Morgan Freeman's Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew." Lest you think Ullman is one of those dame wannabes who worship the Bard, she bellows, "I hate Shakespeare," reverting to Cockneys peak, the "A's" of "hate" and "Shakespeare" sounding like Ts." She qualifies her outburst with: "I hate the way people in England generally perform Shakespeare." The stage-trained actress then admits, "OK, maybe it's because I was generally cast as the servant, and the people who couldnt act got the major parts and the long passages, and they wandered around the stage babbling, 'Hither dither, my Ullman comes up for air. "It was about performing Shakespeare where I got all my angry class-system stuff. I was peeved that if you wanted to be an actress in Great Britain, you had to speak as though you had a plum in your mouth." Declaiming this, Ullman lapses into plummy tones, lips aristocratically puckered. British media came to America for a TV show with, at best, a cult following? "I would be so scathing about Shakespeare," Ullman says. "I had pure distaste. Then Kevin, who's so good at it, ordered me to read him.

Encouraged by Joan and Kevin, I rang the New York Shakespeare Festival and auditioned for Joe Papp. I was coached by Kevin." Ullman recognizes the irony of a British actress resisting Shakespeare until she comes to America.
