fnQM. JANUARY Voon tnt HUft Nt irQ Search for Rutgers grid coach grinds slowly, surely Rutgers Beat John Brims P1SCATAWAY The search for a football coach to replace Dick Anderson at Rutgers goes on. Obviously, not at a breakneck pace, but it goes on. The Home News learned that Gerry DiNardo, offensive coordinator at the University of Colorado, was on the Rutgers campus yesterday, apparently to be interviewed for the vacancy created by the firing of Anderson on Dec. 12, 10 days after his team completed a 2-7-2 season.

Reportedly, another top candidate is to be interviewed on campus today. Meanwhile, a source close to the search said there has been considerable interest in Tom Jackson, head coach of the University of Connecticut, who reportedly has been interviewed twice. UConn is a Division I-AA school in title in two of those A UConn spokesman said last night that Jackson is very proud of his Jersey roots and recruits the state heavily. One of his prize recruits from the state is quarterback Matt DeGennaro of Union, who next year as a senior could be one of the top Division I-AA quarterbacks in the country. Though UConn football has been on the upswing under Jackson, the sport still is perceived in the state as somewhat of a step-child to basketball.

The Huskies are second only to Syracuse in Big East basketball attendance over the 11 years of the league. An irony in Jackson's background is that his first game as Conn's head coach was a 22-5 loss to Rutgers in 1983. Artie GigantJno, considered by many as a strong candidate, wiD be corning East today with the Los Angeles Rams, who play the Giants on Sunday at the Meadowiands. The 38-year-old Edison native is special teams coach with the Rams and former defensive coordinator at Southern CaL He has admitted being very much interested in the Rutgers position and is known to have met with a Rutgers representative last week when the Rams were in Philadelphia to play the Eagles. Others who are considered top candidates also come from the NFL ranks.

Ted Cottrell a former Rutgers assistant now with the Buffalo Bills, has been interviewed, as has Gary Stevens, assistant with the Miami Dolphins, and Jerry Pasquale, former assistant with the Jets. During this period when Rutgers is without a coach, recruiting efforts are being beaded by Fran Foley, administrative assistant to the football program, along with Ed OHeh, Pat Flaherty and Kevin Carty, all of whom were assistants on Anderson's staff. Foley said they have been trying to arrange for recruits to make campus visits the last two weekends of the month. All players who were being recruited by Rutgers received letters telling them that the school was still interested in them. National Letter of Intent Day for recruited players is Feb.

11 That is the first day they can sign with the college of their choice. There is a moratorium on face-to-face recruiting next week while the NCAA and football coaches conventions are being hell football, competing in the Yankee Conference. The Huskies are in the Big East in basketball and 17 othe sports. Jackson is a 41-year-old native of Scotch Plains and a 1970 graduate of Penn State where he was a tri-captain of the 1969 Orange Bowl team. His first football coaching job was at Watchung Hills High in Somerset County.

Jackson became an assistant at UConn in 1978 and took over as head coach in 1983. Over the past four seasons, his teams have been 30-14 with records of 8-3, 7-4, 7-4 and 8-3. UConn shared the Yankee Conference Sacramento hires Motta to be coach Green Brook wrestling team exits scene in a blaze of glory Depth is often a nroblem in hieh SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Dick Motta was named coach of the Sacramento Kings yesterday and vowed to turn a longtime losing franchise into a winner. Motta, a surprise selection, also knows turning the Kings around won't be easy and warned against expecting miracles.

The Kings, with the third worst record in the league at 7-20, said Motta would take over after yesterday's game against Denver. Until yesterday, former Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks coach John MacLeod was considered the front-runner for the job. Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Schuler and Orlando Magic assistant coach Bob Weiss were also interviewed. Motta, who quit the Dallas Mavericks in 1987 after 19 seasons as an NBA head coach in Chicago, Washington and Dallas, said there was no mystery to his coming out of retirement After working as a broadcaster for Detroit Piston games, he said the offer from the Kings was attractive. Neither the Kings nor Motta, whom team officials said is third most "winningest" coach in NBA history, disclosed terms of Motta's contract, but Motta said he was "purely elated" to be joining the team.

"I think this situation is one that is suited for me, and I hope I'm suited for the Sacramento Kings," Motta said at a news conference announcing his appointment "I don't consider myself a miracle worker of any type. I'm a plodder, and things will get better gradually." "I'm fairly old. My fangs aren't as sharp as they used to be, but there's still a spark there and the juices are running," Motta, 58, said. "I've never failed in my life, and I'm not about to here. And I've checked the team out pretty carefully," Motta added.

"I don't think it's going to be a piece of cake for the next year and a half. But I guarantee we'll get better I've had three teams in the NBA, and all of them won a division. All of them Manny Bibbo, Don Guisti, Vlnny Loffredo, Mike Hall and newcomer Brian Wagnar. The Bengals might not win again all year. Some of the scores will certainly be lopsided against them.

But in real terms, in competition down on the mat they have not been beaten yet No matter what the final record might say, these Bengals are definitely going out in style. Turning to this week's Top 10, a few small shakeups have jarred the rankings somewhat Madison Central and South Plainfield remain at the top, but Somerville's SCT title lifts the Pioneers past Bernards and East Brunswick and into third. Cedar Ridge remains at sixth followed by Piscataway, JP. Stevens, Woodbridge and Sayreville. Teams that can move in once those four GMC Red Division teams start beating each other include Middlesex, Ridge and Bridgewater West THE HOME NEWS WRESTLING TOP 10 1 Madison Central (5-0) 2.

Piscataway (3-0) 8. J.P.Stevens (3-1) 9. Woodbridge (1-1) 10. Sayreville (3-2) H.S. Wrestling Tom Rysinski happy because we outwrestled them and the other team's down even though they won the match." But last night luck came through as Green Brook battled a Bayley-Ellard team with the same depth problem.

The Bengals took full advantage of the chance, winning all five contested bouts on the way to a 34-24 victory. "We went in without two of our best wrestlers and won," said Miller. "The kids were shocked." Those two outstanding wrestlers are the only seniors on the squad, co-captains John Guerriero and Joe Sansone. Along with Tim Myers, they have turned in solid seasons for the Bengals. In last week's Somerset County Tournament Myers took third at 152 with a 5-3 decision over Pat Wilde of Somerville in the consolation final while Guerriero earned fourth place at 130.

Overall, Myers owns a 9-1 record, Guerriero is 7-2 and Sansone stands at 6-2. "Both John and Timmy just missed getting into the finals and Joey Sansone wrestled in that with bronchial pneumonia," said Miller, who was happy to escape last place while bringing just five wrestlers into the tournament In addition to those three, the squad includes Mike Simcoe, school sports, but with wrestling it can be especially acute. After aU, no gadget plays or innovative defenses can conceal the fact you cannot fill each weight class. So with Green Brook High School closing after this year due to declining enrollment and only eight wrestlers left in the program, it would not have been surprising to see the Bengals roll up the mats and spend winter afternoons watching Oprah, Phil or Geraldo. Instead, Green Brook decided to field a team.

The lack of bodies will ensure the Bengals go out with a losing record, but a closer look will reveal the team is definitely going out a winner. Even on the most perfect of nights, the Bengals can give up to 30 points in forfeits. No one understands the situation better than head coach Alex Miller, and Miller was straightforward with his team from the beginning. "I knew we'd be in this situation, so on the first day of practice I told them if we won any matches we'd be lucky," said Miller. There was little luck early on, as five matches resulted in five losses to Middlesex, Sayreville, South River, Bound Brook and Dunellen, although not one of those teams outdeuled the Bengals in head-to-head bouts.

Forfeits decided each one. "It's the same result after each match," said Miller. "Our team's DICK MOTTA promises improvement won 50 games, and this one will, too." The team said Jerry Reynolds would coach his final Kings game last night, with Motta observing, and that Motta would take over coaching duties for tomorrow's game against the Portland Trail Blazers. During his NBA career, Motta had 808 wins and 750 losses. The only coaches who won more games were Red Auerbach, with 938, and Jack Ramsay, with 864.

The Devils were outshot 14-6 during the first period and the Kings jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 6:34 when Mike Krushelnyski smacked in his seventh goal of the season. Maley's second goal of the season after just 1:02 had elapsed in the second period got New Jersey even, but McSoriey made it 2-1 Kings at 5:31 when he fired in his eighth. Patrik Sundstrom deadlocked the game at 8:02 when he took a pass from John MacLean and knocked in his 14th of the season. "I don't think it's happening enough. We're going with guys and they're not playing well You figure they're going to start playing well so you go longer and longer with them and they still don't play well So you think maybe they won't," said WenzeL He hinted a stern evaluation has to be made which could result in several changes.

"We're trying but we're groping. Maybe we'll have to change the way we do things or change the personnel around. We do a lot of different things but we're not doing any of them very well Well have to sit down and see what we can come up with." They dont have much time to do it as 5-4 Rhode Island, fresh off a 71-61 win over Penn State Wednesday, comes to the Louis Brown Athletic Center tomorrow night "It seems like we've been away from home a long time. It will be good to get back there," said WenzeL There's little else for Wenzel to feel positive about these days. KNIGHT NOTES Keith Hughes led the Knights with 16 points while Jones had 14 and Lumpkin 13, all in the second half.

Wenzel said he's considered starting Lumpkin, the freshman forward from South Brunswick, J. UMass shot 54.9 percent from the field, the first time it's done that since it pummeled Rutgers here last season. SCARLET Continued from Page C1 now 5-3, extended its lead. It grew to as large as 18 points on a baseline jumper by Tony Barbee, a freshman forward who led all scorers with 22 points. Reminiscent of the Seton Hall game, the Knights then began launching three-pointers and closed to within nine at 73-64 on a long one by Donnell Lumpkin with 3:26 remaining.

But the Minutemen, a poor free throw shooting team, nailed 7-of-8 while holding the Knights scoreless to put the game away. "We made some good plays at the end. We battled all the way. It just wasn't enough," said WenzeL Wenzel didn't feel the Knights' performance was a drop off from the two losses in the Rainbow Classic last weekend. "We had high hopes for the new year and then we came here and played badly.

It gets a little discouraging," he said. Senior guard Rick Dadika, who missed two games and then came off the bench in two because of an ankle sprain, started in place of Jones but played only eight minutes in the first halt Jones, who finished with a career-high 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting in just 17 minutes, started the second half. Twelve Knights saw action as Wenzel desperately searched for a winning combination. He didn't feel he substituted too much. Maley, who was traded to the Devils from the Montreal Cana-diens for a third round draft choice in 1987, said facing Gretzky was "a challenge." "It's amazing what he has done," said Maley. "But you have to put it aside." Maley the fighter slugged it out with McSoriey midway through the second period His effort landed him in the penalty box for seven minutes two for instigating and five for fighting.

Maley worked hard tonight McSoriey and I were high sticking and I told Maley he didn't have to do it He said he wanted to because he was high sticking others." The victory before a big crowd brought a smile to Cunniffs face. "Sean (goaltender Burke) kept us in the game early and then you could see the team get confidence," Cunniff said.

"Brenda had a nice floor game," said Grentz who also liked the play of freshman point guard Cheryl Cop with seven points and five assists in 27 minutes. Still, it took the Lady Knights a while to get going and to get the Louis Brown Athletic Center crowd 1,130 into it The WRams surprised Rutgers by taking a quick 7-2 lead as Kelsen scored on a driving layup, Mary Malone followed with a 3-point shot and Greenberg knocked in a jumper for the five-point lead within the first four minutes. Rhode Island also used an aggressive defense that bothered the Lady Knights earty.

"Yes, I. think we did come out a little flat" said Grentz, "but we also had some spurts and I was pleased with LaTonya's boardwork. She used patience tonight and she put the ball up softly. "But I'll give them (the WRams) credit They're scrappy." The Lady Knights erased that early Rhode Island lead by scoring the next 11 points behind the shooting of Johnson, Ust Picott and Hansen for a 13-7 lead which they steadily built to the 17-point half-time cushion. "But" said Grentz, "we have to be more dominant" Continued from Page C1 start the second half.

Picott (a game-high 16 points with eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks in 22 minutes) scored the next seven points and added a layup to conclude the string after Tanya Hansen dropped in a layup off a feed from Ust for the 32point lead after only 4:48 had ticked off the dock. Hansen finished with nine points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals in 27 minutes. And 6-4 sophomore LaTonya Johnson was the only other player besides Picott in double figures for RU with 14 points along with game-high figures of 12 rebounds and five blocks. For the WRams, 5-5 junior guard Kathy Greenberg had a team-high 11 points while 5-7 freshman guard Anne Kelsen managed 10. For Grentz, this was a game that afforded the opportunity to play everybody and everybody scored.

Everybody, that is, except 6-3 freshman forward CTa Mitchelson who sat on the bench with a brace supporting her damaged right knee. "We don't know what it is yet," said Grentz.
