From Los Angeles. By The Associated Press PITTSBURGH Mario Lemieux extended his point-scoring streak to 33 games with two goals, the second one with 2:57 left in regulation, to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-3 tie with the New York Rangers last night Lemieux's second goal came as a Pittsburgh power play was expiring. Zariey Zalapski fired a shot from the right point that Mike Richter stopped but couldn't cover. Before Richter could lunge for the loose puck, Lemieux skated in and put in his 34th goal New York's Kelly Kisio broke a 1-1 tie at 2:25 of the second period with a power-play goal Tom Bar-rasso stopped John Ogrodnick's breakaway but Kisio pushed the rebound into the open net for his seventh goal Tomas Sandstrom gave New York a 3-1 lead at 4:09 with a rush that started in the defensive zone. The Knights return home to face Penn State Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in the Atlantic 10 Game of the Week. RUTGERS (90) Two FTs by Sikma help boost Bucks a lot, but it's the home runs that count His arm is the most remarkable I've ever seen, and his general athletic ability supplements it He can throw harder, further, with greater accuracy off balance than should be possible. He's tall, strong, tough and can run. What reminds me of Mantle is this: Other players were in awe of Mantle's raw speed and power.

He could hit any kind of pitch 500 feet; not that he would all the time, but no one type was immune. And dragging a bunt or playing center field he would simply outrun the ball His skill and grasp of the game, both considerable, could be matched or surpassed by others, but he had these physical capabilities that others simply didn't (Bo Jackson is like that) Elway gives the same impression. Like Mantle, he doesn't always show the greatest patience (Montana does). Like Mantle, who sometimes swung too hard, Elway forces things. But when he connects, one says "nobody else, but nobody, could have done that" And his peers, not just fans, say it This matchup should be fun.

Leonard Koppett is a columnist with the Peninsula Times Tribune. Green was a key factor, too. She picked that kid's pocket twice and then everybody else started doing it." West Virginia got the ball with 29 seconds left in the first OT but the Rutgers defense prevented the Mountaineers from getting off a shot "Defense," said Grentz, "that was the key." RUTGERS (87) Phil Bourque got Pittsburgh back within one at 5:58. Richter made a sprawling save against Troy Loney and was out of position, enabling Bourque to poke in the loose puck for his 14th goaL Ulf Dahlen scored for New York at 328 of the first period, taking Randy Mailer's pass from behind the net and drilling a shot past Bar-rasso. It was Dahlen's first goal since Dec.

27, which was also against Pittsburgh. Lemieux scored on a power play at 6:23. He gathered a rebound and and put a short shot past Richter. Canucks 3, Flyers 2 PHILADELPHIA Dan Quinn's goal at 3:39 of overtime gave Vancouver a win over Philadelphia, extending the Fryers' winless streak to nine games and keeping them winless in the new year. The 0-6-3 slide matches the Flyers' longest winless streak since they went 0-5-4 from Jan.

19-Feb. 6, 1982. Philadelphia has lost 12 home games this season, nine by one goal. Hornets 110 Nuggets 108 DENVER Charlotte, getting four of Kelly Tripucka's 28 points to hang on in the final minute, won its first road game in 17 tries this season, beating the Denver. The Hornets, the last NBA team to win on the road, had lost 17 straight away from home, including their final game last season.

The victory also ended their six-game losing streak. Alex English had 28 points for Denver. Clippers 105 SuperSonics 95 LOS ANGELES Ken Norman, replacing the injured Ron Harper, scored a season-high 35 points as the Los Angeles Clippers beat Seattle for their fifth victory in six games. Utah at Sorjomento, 10:30 p.m. Quinn gave the Canucks their first victory in 13 overtime games this season by taking a cross-ice pass from Petri Skriko and beating goaltender Ken Wregget to the glove side from the right circle. Stars 7, Nords 4 BLOOMINGTON, Minn. Dave Mackey equaled his 58-game career output with two goals in the second period, when Minnesota scored a season-high five times en route to a victory over Quebec. Mike Modano also scored twice, including the go-ahead goal with 6:37 left in the second, becoming the 13th Minnesota rookie and first since Brian Bellows in 1982-83 to get 20 goals.

Mackey, taken off Chicago's roster in the preseason waiver draft, hadn't scored since Jan. 16, 1989. Kings 9, Red Wings 4 INGLEWOOD, Calif. All-Stars Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille scored two goals apiece as Los Angeles beat Detroit to snap a seven-game winless streak that had infuriated owner Bruce McNall. Bernie Nicholls, who has become the subject of many trade rumors, broke out of a scoring slump with three assists.

Defenseman Larry Robinson had four assists. Flames 2, Bruins 2 BOSTON Craig Janney's goal 40 seconds into the third period gave Boston a tie with Calgary. Greg Hawgood, who earlier set up Cam Neely for the Bruins' first goal, redirected Neers pass across the ice to Janney, who beat Mike Vemon for his 10th goal of the season. Leafs 4, Blues 1 ST. LOUIS Backup goaltender Jeff Reese stopped 48 shots as Toronto beat St Louis for its sixth victory in as many games with the Blues this season.

SCARLET Continued from Page C1 Hughes was fouled on an uncontested layup attempt and, in frustration, GW senior forward Mike Jones threw the ball. Referee Pete Pavia called a technical foul to the chagrin of the crowd and GW Athletic Director Steve Bilsky, who leaned over the scorer's table, berated Pavia. It didn't make any difference, however, as Hughes nailed one of two from the stripe and Duncan canned both technicals. After GWs Ellis McKennie missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity, Duncan drove the lane and fed Carter along the baseline for a layup and then made a steal at half court and drove for a layup to make it 82-71 with 1:37 remaining, killing GWs comeback hopes. "He wanted the ball.

He wanted to take the free throws and he did it well," said Wenzel. He wanted it at the start of the second half as well, scoring the Knights' first 10 points after intermission and feeding Tom Savage for a slam at the end of a well-run fast break to make it 57-34 with 15:46 to go. But GWs pressure forced 17 second-half turnovers by the Knights and it was up to Duncan, who had 19 of his points after intermission, to guide them to victory. If his vision stays clear, he could lead the Knights to even greater heights before the season's over. "We knew it was going to be tough.

But we want to put it together for four or five games in a row and get back on track so we can get back in KNIGHT UNES: Savage scored 11 points before fouling out to move into SUPER Continued from Page CI Montana does something like that on the football field, where every play has a design. I believe there are other quarterbacks who can "see," with eye and mind, what Montana sees. I believe there are others who, when set, can throw as accurately has he can, the way baseball pitchers do. But to throw that accurately, that often, under fire, that quickly, in motion, with such consistency is what makes him unique. And it's not just hitting a receiver in full stride (which makes those 70-yard runs off a 10-yard pass possible).

It's the non-interceptable low throw on a comebacker when a first down is needed; the right amount of loft over a defender into the end zone corner, the minimum exposure of the receiver to injury when he isn't forced to reach, or wait, in traffic in the middle. It's the whole repertoire of the "playmaker," the word I admire most in basketball. Elway doesn't do that, but he performs single-play miracles. He hits home runs. He also strikes out LADIES Continued from Page C1 cott, who fouled out with 4:12 still left in the first OT, finished with 13 points, three assists and four steals.

And senior co-captain Suzanne Cooper starting in Ust's usual spot in the backcourt netted 12 points. West Virginia, meanwhile, was led by Donna Abbott's game-high 27 points along with 15 rebounds while Tracey Slogik added 14 points and 5-10 freshman reserve Jodie Runner 13. "I was pleased," said Grentz. "It was just a matter of believing we could do it because we can." And Grentz said one key to the victory was when Johnson and Hansen started talking. "It was good that LaTonya opened her mouth and that Tanya opened her mouth," said Grentz.

"We all talked in the huddle," explained Johnson. "We talked to each other about playing as a team and I knew we were going to win it when we went out in the second overtime. We played together and hustled at the end." Freshman Vicky Green broke the 71-71 tie after the first OT by stealing the ball and driving in for an easy layup that gave Rutgers a quick lead at the start of the second OT and the Mountaineers who couldn't find the basket in those final five minutes trailed the rest of the way. Hansen followed with a layup on a nice pass from Green before Ust grabbed a bad West Virginia pass and went in for an unmolested layup and a 77-71 lead at 3:02. After that, Hansen scored a pair of buckets before Ust, Cooper and Hansen dropped in the final six points from the foul line.

"Our defense did it," said Grentz. That was the key. Jack Sikma scored 19 points and made two key free throws to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to their 11th victory in 14 games, 115-112 last night over the slump-ridden Washington Bullets. Sikma made the free throws with 2.7 seconds remaining as the Bucks handed the Bullets their fourth straight loss and 13th in 15 games. The Bucks, who led from the middle of the first quarter, saw a 14-point halftime lead cut to one twice in the final 63 seconds. But they made five of six free throws down the stretch to hang on. Sikma had three of the final five points, and Al-vin Robertson the other two.

The Bullets went without leading scorer Jeff Malone, who sustained a back strain in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's loss at New Jersey. Ledell Eackles, who started in his place, scored a career-high 37 points. He made a 3-pointer with 11.8 seconds left to pull the Bullets to 113-112. After Sikma put the Bucks up by three, Eackles tried another 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it rimmed out Bulls 132 Warriors 107 CHICAGO Michael Jordan scored 44 points as Chicago put on its best offensive show of the season to win its 14th straight home game, over Golden State. The loss, which denied Coach Don Nelson's 600th career victory for the third straight game, dropped Golden State's road record to 2-15.

Jordan, who did not play in the fourth quarter, made seven 3-point shots to set a Chicago Stadium and team mark. Craig Hodges had the old record with five 3-pointers. Jordan also had 12 rebounds and eight assists. The Bulls set a club record converting 11 three-pointers. The old mark was nine set last March against Indiana.
