JANUARY 5, 1961 THE JACKSON HOLE GUIDE Riding the Range By Floy Tonkin Most everyone in Jackson Hole got into town New Year's Eve to welcome the little fellow in fitting style they whooped it up until the wee sma' hours. At the RJ some of the folks celebrated a "Chinese New Year" with firecrackers out on the street (probably held over from the Fourth of July- nobody seemed to know where they came from!) Hats and horns and what-haveyou made much din everywhere. There were crowds in all the "bright spots" and everyone had such a good time it took all day New Years to get well. A fellow was going about his usual round of kissing New Years Eve. He approached a cute gal with the usual "Happy New Year baby." Said she, "I'd kiss you if you didn't have so much lipstick Can't even tell where your mouth is." HEARD THE NEXT DAY Voice over the telephone Sun- day morning: "Hello, and how are you today?" "Fine, just fine." "Sorry.

Wrong number." "Last time I saw you were leaning against the bar, and you weren't in too good shape." "Boy, if you thought I was in bad shape then, you shoulda seen me later!" Nobody caught cold Saturday night, even, if half of them ran around town without coats or overshoes. With that much antifreeze inside, everyone was ty warm. "Well, I see you survived." "Listen. it wasn't easy." We so often say we don't have time for this or that. We have, and have always had, all the time there is.

Jackson and the. Association have extended invitations to several other cutter racing associations of the Rocky Mountain area to bring their top teams to Jackson to compete at the time of the finals and thus see where the best drivers and horses are located.

Invitations have been sent to the Bridger Valley Cutter Associ ation, Lyman, Wyoming; the Snake River Cutter Association. Baggs, Wyoming; the Sublette County Cutter Association, Pinedale, Wyoming; the Rocky Mountain Cutter Association, Bancroft, Idaho; and the Wasatch Cutter Association, Clearfield, Utah. The meet at Jackson has, of necessity, been extended to four daysFebruary 25-28, 1961. The people of Jackson have been working their track for some three weeks and thus will be assured ot one of the finest tracks for cutter racing to be had in the Rocky Mountain area. The Wort Hotel and many of the motels are open to take care of housing the visitors and contestants.

Reservations may be made to Mr. Harold Yager, Housing Chairman, Jackson, Wyoming. Adequate stable facilities will be available. Cutter racing in Jackson Hole was inaugurated some twenty years ago with John Wort of the Wort Hotel; the late Gibb Scott, rancher and horseman; George Lumley, druggist, and others deciding that each had the best team and could only settle the question with competition. Gibb Scott was known popularly as the "Daddy of Cutter Racing" in Jackson Hole.

At the cutset the races were run on the main street of Jackson, but for many years they have been held just west of town alongside the main highway which provides a fine grandstand from which to watch the events. Cutter racing is a colorful sport and is steeped in the tradicions of a far reaching past going back to the mid '80's. The extra risk occasioned by the snow gives it a glamour not had on the dirt tracks. Today the Quarter horse and the Thorobred are the popular horses for this competitive sport. Some associations run a half mile, although most run only a quarter mile.

There are times when Mother Nature deprives a community of sufficient snow on which to hold its meet. In such cases the drivers will not be denied competition and just change from the snow cutter to the Roman chariot type of vehicle. The cutters are set low on the runners, with the driver sitting on a small seat that looks like a stool, or standing as s.me prefer. Most of the cutters are vehicles of beauty. Some years ago officials of the General Motors Corporation who visit Jackson Hole regularly to hunt and fish, learning of the interest in cutter racing, had designed and made for presentation to Mr.

John Wort a beautiful cutter of plastic material. It is not used in racing by reason of being quite heavy but during the cutter races it is on exhibition as a show piece of the craftsman's art. The races at Jackson this year are being dedicated in memorium to Gibb Scott "Daddy of Cutter Racing," who died recently at his ranch. His team, Boots and Slippers, was well known to all who follow cutter racing.
