Page 22 The Winona (Miss.) Times, May 5, 1983 Mrs. Ruth Smith remembers Don Peterson, the student The fascination of your adventure has made us all envious and proud of our native son. Smith said she expected from her prize student. "I was not surprised," at his advances in the space program, she said. "I haven't been disappointed.

I've been very pleased." Mrs. Ruth Smith, 80, of Vaiden said Donald Peterson provided four years of easy teaching when she was a mathematics instructor at Winona high School. Now retired since the late 10's Mrs. Smith lives in Vaiden but easily recalls Peterson as a dextrous student of math who provided little trouble for teachers. "He's wonderful," she said recently.

"I think he was wonderful in high school." never had to correct him," Mrs. Smith said of the straight-A student. He did not misbehave. I'd have to say he was unusually good. I don't think I've known any better." Many of teachers who held classes at Winona High School at or near the time Peterson graduated in 1951 have moved away or died but Mrs.

Smith said opinions of Peterson were pretty much universal. "I never did hear any adverse criticism of him," she recounted, "by students or teachers. He was just superior." And the great heights to which the Challenger space shuttle crew member has risen to, figuratively and literally, have been about what Mrs. WINONA FLORAL CO. 1 1 5 STERLING AVE.

Peterson on people: "And it always comes back to the people I've known those who believed in me and helped me. I was privileged to have the parents I have, to have grown up in a town like Winona, to have had the help oj many fine teachers here, to have met and married a fine wife who has boosted me over many a low spot. It was hard work, and it has been very demanding but it was worth it, and I am grateful to each one who had a part in getting me to the place I am now."
