Lummis Aughenbaugh and Schloss said they were looking for someone that embodied "conservative values" and would follow the party line on important issues.

Both also said last week it was important to choose candidates that would carry on Thomas' legacy of conservation. Sansonetti, who worked for Thomas when Thomas went to the U.S. House in 1989, won the most votes 58 in the final round of voting Tuesday by the 71-member state GOP Central Committee. Barrasso, a surgeon from Casper, was second with 56 votes. Former state Treasurer Lummis of Cheyenne finished third with 44 votes.

The party will forward the three finalists Wednesday to Freudenthal, a Democrat, who has five days to pick a successor to Thomas. Through two rounds of speeches and two question-and-answer sessions, all three nominees and many of their fellow candidates expressed similar political beliefs such as gun rights and multiple use of public land, denounced excessive regulation and taxation and said they would return to Wyoming as often as possible. The others, Teton County Commissioner Bill Paddleford and Teton County Republican Party Chairman Joe Schloss, were knocked out in the first round of voting when the field was trimmed to 10. Paddleford, who is serving his third term as a county commissioner, finished 19th overall.
