of 3530 Tyrone St. Pe- lersourg, reureu iui Republic Steel Tuesday Timet Bureau TAMPA A MacDill Air Force Base pilot was killed Tuesday when he ejected from a two-man F4E "Phantom" Jet fighter-bomber Into the Gulf of Mexico 50 miles south of here. The remaining pilot, Capt. Jesse Keith Beavers, 25, of Mitchell, was able to bring the jet safely back to MacDill. The dead pilot was Identi fied as Capt.

Edwin M. Gibbons, 30, of Chapin, S.C. 1 BEAVERS landed the Jet 20 minutes after the Incident and told Air Force investigators the plane had "controllability problems." Capt. John Taylor, MacDill public information officer, said the airplane encountered a "technical in-flight problem" about 10:40 a.m.causing the back seat pilot to eject from about 20,000 feet. Helicopters from MacDill and the St.

Petersburg Coast Guard Air Station searched the Gulf for several hours before finding Gibbons' body. THE BODY was picked up by the Coast Guard cutter Steadfast, and transferred to an Air Force helicopter. The cause of Gibbons ejecting and Beavers being able to stay with the airplane despite control problems, has not been determined, Taylor said. Taylor said the accident will be probed by an accident review board which "painstakingly reconstruct fatal aircraft accidents. He said it may be several months before the board's findings are published.

Taylor said Gibbons was married and that his family lives In the Tampa area. (Oct. 10, 1972). Bobbitt Funer. al Chapel.
