Grass Planting To Revitalize Bays Planned (FROM These include small clams and crabs which are important sources of food for larger forms of marine life. "We will be working with these grasses like a farmer works with his crop," Sykes said. He cautioned, however, the project never will be able to I create a method of repopulatling the entire area depleted by dredge-fill activities or other causes.

Sykes cited the water between two finger fills as one such area, pointing to almost total lack of tidal circulation. OTHER REASONS which would prevent repopulation of barren areas would include depth and clearness of water. Sea grasses need light to survive, Sykes said. The light is filtered out beyond a certain depth, and in turbid areas the light cannot penetrate the murky waters. This is not a new idea, Sykes points out.

It has been tried elsewhere. But it apparently has never been carried through. Some problems have arisen in the early stages of this experiment, Fuss said. Most have had to do with the pumping and filtering system which brings water to the tanks. First attempts produced too much silt.

Other attempts at bringing the water from beneath the bay bottom produced an unknown substance which precipitated and clogged the tanks. Fuss has devised a system which he hopes will control both problems, however, and hopes to have the tanks filled within the week. Births MOUND PARK HOSPITAL MR. AND MRS.
