But to win this one means a lot "We only played one really bad match all season, but it cost us the Red Division championship. I'm proud of our kids. I told them when we were getting off the bus that they were capable of winning the championship and they responded.

Two seniors "We're going to miss John Goetz and Mike Esposito," Czubati added. "They've been with me for four years and played on three championship teams. But our younger kids did very well today too, so I'm looking to the future." The other players Czubati referred to were John Kelly (92), Pat Phalen (83) and Bob Nolan (92). St Joseph's other scorers were Vic Cardace (95), Jon McMahon (89) and Kevin Griffin (86). Ironically, East Brunswick, the team that snapped the Spartans' long winning streaks and won the Red Division title, couldn't muster any kind of charge yesterday and was never in contention.

The same was true of North Brunswick, which stormed to the White Division title this year. And team titles do mean a lot Just ask Schoenfeld. "I'd trade this anytime for a team championship," Schoenfeld said while clutching his trophy. "Even though we didnt win today and our record wasnt that good during the season, I feel our team is as good as any." Schoenfeld was asked if winning as a sophomore had placed pressure on him in the last couple of seasons. "No, in fact there has been nothing like that" he said.

"Having won By GENE HALEY Home News sports writer EAST BRUNSWICK They had a 47-match winning streak broken during the season and had a 61-match winning streak on their home course at Glenwood Country Club shattered as welL But the Spartans of Madison Central got it all back yesterday when they won the Greater Middlsex Conference team championship at the Tamarack Golf Course. It was the third straight conference title for the Spartans, who were runnerups in 1985 when it was the Middlesex County Championship. Another repeater yesterday was Dave Schoenfeld of J.P. Stevens. Schoenfeld won the initial GMC tournament individual title in 1986 when he was a sophomore.

After placing fifth last season, he came back yesterday to shoot a five-over-par 77 and win by two strokes. Both Sean Klotzbach of St Joseph's and John Goetz of Madison Central had 79s. Mike Axelrod of North Brunswick was fourth with an 81, while Joe Roche of Carteret grabbed fifth with an 82. Klotzbach and Goetz were playing in the same foursome, and didn't have much chance to worry about individual titles, as the Spartans and Falcons were locked in a close team battle. They were in the next-to-last group of the day and the Spartans held a slim three-shot lead after the first three players on each of the five-man squads had finished.

Final foursome When Klotzbach and Goetz came in with their 79s, the outcome was left for Mike Esposito of Madison Central and Phil Geiger of the Falcons to decide in the final group of the day. Esposito outshot Geiger 85-87 to give the Spartans the title, 431-436. North Brunswick was third with a 452, J.P. Stevens was fourth with 454 and East Brunswick and South Plainfield tied for fifth at 464. Rich Czubati, the Madison Central coach, was thrilled with the victory.

"This definitely means more than the others," he said. "To win one is tough and to win two is even tough Dave Schoenfeld of J.P. Stevens watches a shot en route to the individual championship of the Greater Middlesex Conference tournament yesterday. Rutgers' Johnson is drafted by Mets EMERSON Paul Johnson, Rutgers' outstanding defensive first baseman, will continue his baseball career as a pitcher. Johnson was drafted as a pitcher in the 21st round of the free agent draft by the New York Mets and signed a contract Thursday night The 6-3, 180-pound right-hander will report to Kingsport, TeniL, in the Appalachian League.

Admitting that he's "kind of surprised because I haven't pitched myself, I think I concentrated a lot more today and over the last two years on winning as a team." Schoenfeld will be going on to Vanderbilt University in the fall and will play golf. Also announced at the championships yesterday was the GMC All-Conference team. Schoenfeld headed up the team, along with Goetz, Axelrod, and Roche. Also named to the nine-man squad were John Harris and Jason Wolcott of East Brunswick, Chris Dzergoski of Sayreville and Neil Flanagan and Dave Pellicane of North Brunswick. Ken Burnett of East Brunswick was coach of the year.
