Michael Jackson may spark a revolution fn 1,1 it 1 to raise the dead. "Revolution" as background music for a Nike sneaker commercial? Is nothing sacred? Then again, what should we expect from an entertainer who made millions of bucks exploiting his own music to promote a soft drink that he never drinks? In Lennon's memory, I think the time has come to stage another revolution. Don't buy Nike sneakers. If he hadn't been cremated, I suspect John Lennon would be spinning 33 'A revolutions-per-min-ute in his grave if he could see what Michael Jackson has done with his classic rock 'n roll anthem, "Revolution." Jackson, you may recall, outbid both Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, and former Beatle Paul McCartney for control over Northern Songs, which includes those penned by the Lennon-McCartney songwritingteam. The exploitation of rock 'n roll for advertising purposes has been all around us for at least two years now, and anyone who reads this column knows it's a pet peeve of mine.

It's funny, but I don't think Lennon would be bothered at all to know that former Beatle Ringo Starr is starring in all those tasteless California wine cooler commercials. At least no Beatles music is involved. "After all," Lennon himself might say, 'It's Only Ringo." But what Michael Jackson has done with "Revolution" is enough The Tubes will perform at Sayreville's Club Bene tonight in New York tonight and tomorrow.
