Vinich received more than $7,500 in campaign contributions immediately following Saturday's election in Casper, McDaniel said, adding that many checks have come in since then. And, he said, the staff is beginning a statewide solicitation effort, but he did not speculate on how much the month-long campaign will cost. Although they have not yet begun advertising their candidate, the Democrats plan to begin to do so by the end of this week, McDaniel said.

"Organizationally," he said, "the focus of the campaign will be grass roots, aimed at the precinct level to get out the vote." In addition, he said, Vinich has already begun to travel throughout the state, though his appearance in Teton County has not yet been scheduled. Republicans could not be reached for comment Tuesday about plans for the Thomas campa ign. Craig Thomas, R-Natrona, to fill the U.S.

House seat recently vacated by Dick Cheney. Vinich received 49 of the 66 committee votes cast at the public meeting in Casper, and was elected by unanimous consent. Vinich was the leading Democratic candidate based on his showing in last November's general election, when he lost narrowly in a bid to defeat incumbent U.S. Sen. Malcolm Wallop.

Thomas was nominated by his party's state central committee from a field of 11 candidates after an ballot-elimination process in Casper Friday. The two candidates will face off in a special election April 26 for the seat that Cheney resigned on March 17, after the Senate unanimously approved his nomination as secretary of defense. The two candidates have agreed to a televised debate on the evening of April 12, and a joint appearance at the Rotary Qub in Casper two days etirlier, according to Roger McDaniel, one of Vinich's campaign managers. More debates are expected, he said.
