Sullivan Kennedy and Beach were before the Mayor last evening for investigation of a charge against them that they had been drinking beer in a house of ill-fame the night before It appears that Joseph Knox arrested on Tuesday evening tor being drunk claimed that he had been robbed of $5 and Chief Coliln sent Patton and Sullivan to look for the thief They searched round among the saloons and with the approval of the chief continued among the bawdy houses They went to the house of Laura Erler on North street and the surroundings appeared to be so attractive that they made themselves at home there for a long time and seemed to forget that they were looking for a thief1 Officers Beach and Kennedy were then induced in the place The landlady was sick in bed up stairs but the fun became so fast and furious among the coppers and girls that she came down stairs and made them hush their noise She says of the matter: and Sullivan staid for a couple of hoars but the others were only here about an hoar I see Kennedy and the other man at all only Patton and Sullivan They called up the beer and one of the girls gave it to them and take any money for it As far as I know they drank six bottles of beer Kennedy and Beach were not in all the time While they were here not more than two bottles were drank The chief came down and asked about it and I told him all I knew The officers all admitted their guilt and the Mayor gave them a severe lecture upon their breach of discipline in joining the breaking of the law He wonld be ciiticized for their appointment but as they were new men all possessing good reputations he would fine them $25 promising however that any repetition would cost them their places ST DAY How It Will1 be Celebrated in Columbus by the Jack-son Club One of the college In the city of Lima upon donation of $15000 by her citizens been submitted to them for Uieir rejection or approval 1 There are many reasons why the proposed college should be promptly secured upon the conditions stipulated and only a greater Interest should be manifested in the matter than haa thus far been shown InJ the first place Lima should possess an Institution of learning that will give her such rank and position among the largest jand best cities of the Statel as she Is justly entitled to The great North-west is rapidly jsur-passing all other sections of the State In rapidity of growth and development In both wealth and population Ex-perience In this regard has proven that both wealth and population seek a pom-mon center to which all adjacent territory and towns are tributary The physical features of this section of Ohio indicate that ltj is still without a recognized center of industrial commercial and educational pursults and of population This at once suggests the Inevitable fact that ere long these pursuits and wpalth and population will begin to (drift towards one common center and an effort then to stay the tide in that direction will be utile in the extreme The cltizenstof Lima have been reputed for their excellent spirit of 'public enterprise in encouraging and supporting whatever would contribute to the growth and welfare of the city We are all justly proud of pas' history and to-day we have by reason of the public benevolence and energy of her citizens a city that challenges comparison with any other city ifl the State with 25000 people Shall we stop here and be satisfied with what has been accomplished in the past or shall we maintain that spirit of enterprise that has enabled Lima toj out' rival all other towns In this section of the State? -In the consideration of thisj matter the question naturally arises can a city with a population of only people be the recognized metropolis of Northwestern Ohio? In view of the many ambitious and rivalistlc towns scattered over this section it certainly will require a city of larger proportions Lima has in a measure the acquired facilities and features of a metrOpoli tan city viz: her excellent system of railroa Is radiating in all directions and communicating with the principal cities of the United States as well as of the State Her large number of diversified industries will give employment to many hundreds of honest sober and intelligent sons of toil Her electric street railway and excellent system of public schools and splendid churches together with the numerous handsome business blocks and residences which stand with imposing conspicuousness along her long broad streets and her unsurpassed developed natural resources and advantages all stand forth as lasting monuments to the exerted enterprise and energy of the citizens of Lima! But these institutions of themselves can not produce any greater results for the future welfare of the city or contribute to he growth in any greater degree than they have already given The principle of growth is very much the same in the case of a city as in that of animal and vegetable life certain conditions1 must be observed in order to property sustain life and propagate growth LTer? breath we breathe consumes a certain portion of carbon until in a remarkably short period of time we thus consume our own weight Yet consuming process is essential to the existence o' life and continuation of growth So in the building of a city it is necessary that the citizens consume their acquired wealth and energies to continue the growth and prosperity of the placewhlch in turn as every enter prising business man Knows will increase and enlarge his opportunities to acquire wealth and bring prosperity to the citizens individually Procure the proposed college and you will add an institution1 to the city which will bring more wealth and population than any other which the city to-day possesses Dotson remedies w'hlchj used once will always be kept in th house Laxador we refer to Price pnly 25 cents a package The man who scolds his crying! aby and is too mean to Invest 25 cents in a bottle of Lr Baby Syrup should be divoi It is one of those rare good arced Ho For Ho I For Columbus The Pennsylvania Co will special train to Columbus Ohio next Sunday January 12th leaving Wayne at with the Club of Ft Wayne Ind Wert and Delphos clubs I The special will arrive at Lima at 4 whee it wilt pick up the two Pullman Sleeping cars and combination car wfaich will be left here sometime Saturday to be decorate and nsed by toe Brice Club to Columbus during their stay there and returning The train will arrive at Col 6m bus about 7:30 I I This will make a very nice trip and all Lima People are invited to join the Clttb in their special train to the capital city Rates for the round trip $215 88-2t run a text Ft Hendricks also! Black in Orertand Older Than tha Pyramids With an antiquity rivaling probably exceeding that of tbe pyramids of Egypt and a reputation scarcely inferior it is remarkable how little notice has been taken of the death of the colossal dragon tree of Oratava This gigantic hoary headed vegetable veteran died almost suddenly a few years ago and may be said like the old masterpiece to have gone pieces all at once all at once and nothing first just as babbies do when they After a baby he od of centuries decades of 'maturity and a decadence of ages it does seem pitiable that the departure of this wonder of the world should have evoked little or no comment When Alonzo de Lugo the conqueror of Teneriffe came to Oratava in 1498 he spared the tree but scandalized at the profane mysteries which bad taken place in its interior he converted its hollowness into a chapel for holy mass Humboldt in 1799 gives its height as about fifty or sixty feet and its circumference near the roots at forty-five feet and the diameter of the trunk at ten feet from the ground is stlil twelve English and he computed its ags at 10000 years Tbe opening wss so large that a table was placed in it round which fourteen persons could seat themselves and a staircase in tbe interior conducted the visitor np to tbe height whence the branches sprang Loudon Globe A Kirn Egyptian Flora The National Museum of Egyptian Antiquities at Bulak contains a very interesting collection of plants hich have been found in the catacomb and sepulchral monuments of tbe country Dr Schwewfurth as the first to study this aacieut flora width contains no example of a plant that does not grow today in tbe Nile valley Nor does the most minute examination sbow the least difference between tlie vegetation hich flourished fifty centuries ago and that of tbe present time In some rssew tbe color of the flowers can be clealfly distinguished as for instance the purple larkspur tbe red poppy the reddish brown saffroo and the blue lotus The leaves of the watermelon contain grains of chlorophyll perfectly visible in the microscope All these were found in great numbers in the burial place of tbe fifteenth dynasty 8000 years and in one tomb of tbe same time some ears of hurley In later monuments were discovered mustard flax cucumbers lentils nc rones juniper bemes dates holly hoe rysonthemuma figaolive onions and grapes Around the necks and upon the breast of tbs mammies of 1100 (ie gar Lands of celery leaves and bljr lotus flowers In regard to various specimens of grain discovered it may be added that no attempt to make them grow has ever succeeded the plants having been subjected to great heat at the time of the embalming and burial which while it preserved them destroyed their germinating power Tbe case in which mummy wheat is said to have been raised are due simply to the fraudulent mixture of modern with the ancient grains Chicago Herald Ba a Bnnr An episode a few days ago in which a delicate looking young man completely knocked out an antagonist with fifty pounds superiority in weight and tbe training of a hoodlum has given an impetus to boxing and during the past week no lews than twenty young men have joined the sparring classes A familiarity with the manly art of self defense by no means inculcates a fight ing disposition A good boxer is more than a match for mere brute force as his blows are not aimed in vain A quick smart blow applied to tbe proper spot will knock out a giant who would withstand a blow from a hammer oa his thick head No good boxer ever need be shot by a man at close quarters who is obliged to go to the hip pocket for his gun for when tie reaches back his arm he must raise his head slightly lie leaves his entire front exposed and the jugular is temptingly
