Arid Mm nitihbrgr: Lloyd Hinchberger, the quiet Canadian forest ranger who was the Eastern Hockey League's Coach of the Year in 1971-72, has signed to coach the Suncoast Suns for i sec ond season. Hinchberger and Suns' General Manager Walter Brock agreed to terms several weeks ago, but the formal signing was conducted last told The Times by telephone Friday from his home in North Bay, Ont. Yeo, forward Andre Lajou-nesse and defenseman Jerome Engele will attend the Los Angeles Kings' training camp at Springfield, starting Sept. 16. Hinchberger hopes to pick up several players when the Kings trim their Springfield roster, since the Suns have a player agreement with the National Hockey League club. "A former star defenseman in the EHL, Hinchberger coached the w-d Nashville Dixie Flyers several years before taking the Sun-coast job last summer. Hinchberger was picking strawberries in his backyard llshed teams and we played Charlotte (the eventual league champion) better than any of them." Hinchberger hat spent a busy summer on his offseason Job.

"There was lots of snow here when I got back home in March and then we had a very dry spring. It's been a bad fire season and I was in on the biggest one in the district. It burned 409 acres right in the middle of a fanning community." Hinchberger took over the Suns last fall when they were a disorganized group of cast-offs, hand-me-downs and raw rookies preparing for their 'first season in the EHL. He initiated several deals to bring experienced players such as winger Billy Smith and center Cliff Pennington to St. Petersburg and made the Suns, an interesting team that won 27 games, lost 34 and tied 12, finishing fourth in the EHL's Southern Division.

Cleveland Open Golf Toumampnt Hinson, one of the early finishers, saw his 65 stand up aU day and finished one-' stroke ahead of John Jacobs. a late starter, who breezed in with a 66. LHinson, out in 31 and back in 34, called his round the best "since I can't remember when." Canadian veteran George Knndson and two little-known pros, Mike Spang and Bob Lewis, tied for third with 67s. Next came rookie Lanny Wadkins and tour regulars Miller Barber, Buddy Allin and Australian David Graham at 68. 27, a lanky blond who overcame a childhood bout with polio that left him with a withered left arm, had seven birdies in his round.

He canned three 22-foot putts and a pair of 18-f ooters for birdies. The greens were bumpy and soggy from the heavy rain here the' past several days. "You really had to put a big stroke on it," said Hinson of the putting conditions. Jacobs, younger brother of veteran pro Tommy Jacobs, said he gambled to get the lowest score he's had this year. "I played it safe for five tournaments and came up with nothing, so now I'm to let it all go," he said.

Most of golfs biggest names Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Lee Trevino among them are skipping the tournament. Because of Thursday's rain-out, the 72-hole tourney will run through Monday. Tom Weiskopf, who finished in a group at 60, shot a hole-in-one on the 196-yard No. 7 hole. It was, Weiskopf 's fourth competitive ace and the 17th on the.tour this year.
