OUR ARRAY Or SPARKLING SALADS -1 Lunch 11-3 1.45 BANQUiT FACILITIES children's Prices COCKTAILS total By ERIC ATKINS Timet Drama Wrlrar TAMPA I don't believe It's love at all that motivates the lovable Opal In John Patrick's comedy, ''Everybody Loves Opal," Of course, that four-letter word has been misused so often no one knows what you mean when you have occasion to say It. And this present production at Bartke's Dinner Theatre keeps repeating and repeating the song, "What the world needs now so many times you'd think a cult was forming. WHAT OPAL Is, is a recluse who Is determined to be happy. She lives alone with her cat, Mr. Tanner, gathers junk and throws nothing away.

not even used tea bags. She REVIEW mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm goes around singing to her self, talking to the cat, and greeting every stranger as her life-long friend. Just the type "normal" people call loo-ney. But this kind of attitude toward life Is infectious. And when Opal, in a fierce determination to stay happy, refuses to hear anything, even the truth, that might upset her she wins the hearts of all guilt-ridden "normals." Such Is the stuff that character-study comedies are based upon.

It matters little If she is invaded by underworld types who want to kill her for the insurance money. She ploughs right along undermln- Dial 896-0665 l440 34th Street Dial 446-0141 2456 Gulf-to-Boy St. Petersburg Clearwater lng their plot just by not be-lieving anything bad. A beautiful person. DIRECTOR James Corrado has pulled a booboo in what he has Imposed on his cast during the first act.

Instead of Opal, artfully played by Faith Stanfield, being the only flamboyant one, he brings the three crooks up to farce level. Where this hectic overplaying and running may get one through a normally slow first act, it makes It difficult for us to accept Gayle Roberts as Gloria and Marty Nadler as Sol as "real genuine" people. They are cartoons. Raymond Wood as Bradford and Philip Raia in the dual roles of doctor and policeman have enough expertise not to go overboard. Superior writing wins out, however, and Corrado has the good sense to allow his actors slower delivery and honest attitudes in the final minutes.

You see Opal grows on you. And as she says: "One thing about being ugly, you don't have to worry about losing your looks." "That hat looks like Minnie WHETHER IT was Polly Bergen's opening remark "Gorgeous place you have here (looking at the Coliseum 1930s ceiling) and then "and so are you out there (as she put on her glasses for a closer look) or the novelty of a night fashion showing with couples in attendance (and there were plenty of men in that well-dressed, good-natured audience). It was a charmed evening and a delightful show. It made no matter that the midi's looked "awful" or that some of the 1940s shoes were iggy. The general comment was that the clothes were prettier and the women looked like women again. THE APPLAUSE was spontaneous and generous.

"It's great to have the men on the runway and off. Great to hear their comments about fashion even on those pretty models," was one comment. 1 It was a good Idea the Women's Service League had hope we have more of the same in the future.
