1 1 St. Petersburg Times, Thursday, March 14, 1968 OBITUARIES 4 1 11-B WELL, EXPENSIVE ANYWAY Bridge Raising Big Event By LUCY WARE Times Bureau NEW PORT RICHEY The U.S. 19. drawbridge across the Pithlachascotee River is raised once annually during the Chasco Fiesta but is maintained as a State Road Department (SRD) budget item of about $27,000, according to informed sources. Several local officials have voiced complaints about the funds being expended to keep the bridge in operation.

PORT RICHEY Mayor John Durney said he feels the money could be put to better use for dredging the river or four the highway. "To me a drawbridge is an unnecessary thing. I've never seen it up in four years," Durney added. SRD officials refused to release the exact amount budgeted when contacted by The Times, but said the money actually expended would be far less. "If we spend $5,000 a year, that would be high," said one official who declined to be identified.

MAINTENANCE expenses for the bridge are not listed sep- arately, but are lumped with those for all bridges in Pasco County, according to the SRD. A drawbridge operator from Tampa has to be brought to New Port Richey to operate the span whenever it is opened since a regular operator is not stationed at the bridge. The bridge can technically be opened anytime a boat owner provides the SRD with 24 hours notice so that the operator can be obtained. REQUESTS for opening the bridge apparently have been limited to the annual boat parade in recent years. Port Richey Patrolman Joe Donahue said the bridge ed by SRD officials about once every six months and occasionally gets stuck and must be lowered manually.

for the four-laning of U.S. 19 include two parallel structures which will replace the present two-lane bridge. Both will provide increased clearance and eliminate the need for the drawbridge. The contract for four-laning U.S. 19 from the bridge to Bayonet Point will be let in Tallahassee at 10:30 a.m.
