The New Brunswick resident and former Douglass College student, now a model whose career appears to be taking off like a moonshot, recalls: 'i never had a boyfriend In high school, I was chubby and awkward. People would put me down and I'd believe them.

I was the gnat, always the misfit, always on the outside." Times have changed. Miss Ross, who stands five-foot-eight and weighs 117 pounds, is the winner of L'Oreal's "Look of Radiance" contest, to promote its new line of hair cosmetics for black women. As the winner, she is entitled to a trip to Paris, which she hasn't had time to take, and in a few months her picture will be adorning the packages of the new L'Oreal products. She is also acting as in-person publicity and promotion woman for the 4A CmpoAtfMt DOORS 'M i 595 rl is. Miss Ross, a Brooklyn native who graduated from Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, had been a dance and theater major at Douglass. At the same time she was getting modeling assignments that included catalog work for Sears and J.C. Penney.

The modeling jobs became more frequent and eventually she had to choose between school and career. She chose to model, leaving Douglass after completing her freshman year. She entered the L'Oreal "Look of Radiance" contest after learning about it through a radio commercial. She applied the day before the deadline, sending in a Polaroid shot her mother had taken a year or so ago at Christmas. "Then I forgot all about it.

A week later they notified me that I was one of five regional finalists." The finalists were entertained at a breakfast at Crawdaddy's. along with such luminaries as the fashion editor for Essence Magazine and Tony Bar-bosa, one of the top black photographer in the nation. The finalists remained in New York for three days at the Barbizon Plaza. v'. Id mm- SALE i I FOR TIME CLOCKS SALES AND COMPLETE SERVICE 514 GEORGES RD.

"The day of the final judging at the L'Oreal offices, each girl talked with the judges," says Miss Ross. "We told them what we wanted to do and how we defined beauty. "I said I felt it was one-third your attitude about yourself, one-third your attitude about others, and a whole lot of health." Among the judges were famed photographer Francesco Scavullo and the editor of Ebony magazine. After a luncheon the next day.

Miss Ross was informed she had won. A four-hour photo session with Scavullo came later, with the pictures to be used for possible packaging decor for L'Oreal. Miss Ross has since signed with the Elite Agency and has been photographed for a possible future "Ma- demoiselle" magazine cover. Needless to say, she no longer feels like a wallflower or misfit. Her attitude change first started in 1974, she recalls, when she was chosen Miss Black Teenager of New Jersey, and second runner-up in the pageant's national contest.

The regional eliminations were held in Newark. "I didn't tell anyone I was going," says Miss Ross. "Nobody but my family came, because I knew that if I told anyone else they'd laugh. There were two months of rehearsals and still I never told anyone about the contest. "When I won, people's attitude changed, but it changed because mine did.
