What I'd forgotten is that a word like "competent" is as distasteful to actors as the word "adequate" in describing their performance. They don't even like to be labeled as "real professionals." "Now if you had said something like 'unique' or says Miss Bavier, more or less good-naturedly, "but 'competent'! That's just nothing." Even though I meant it as praise, Miss Bavier is abso lutely right. She deserves much more than the adjective comMtent for her work as Aunt Bee these eight years, going on nine. As she points out, her job Is to take some quite corny situations and try not to make them "soap-opera-ish." "But I will say that you brought me down to earth, so maybe it was for the best. I was beginning to think the success of the series must be me after nearly nine years," says Miss Bavier, showing her favorite Aunt Bee smile.

CKRTAINLY Aunt Bee was and is an integral part of this success story, and Andy Griffith and the producers knew it. The Virginian has no choice but to go along on the hunt, which leads to several surprises when they reach the canyon hideout of the gang.

"We sort of sneaked up on everyone," said Larry Larson, director of planning for the owners of the new station, Hubbard Broadcasting Inc. of Minn. We got the go ahead Monday from the FCC and decided to start our test broadcasts then.

We were carrying a test pattern before that," he added. THE STATION' will go on the air officially January 6. Until that time, it will be broadcasting in color for two. hours daily from 5 to 7 p.m. Programs scheduled to be shown are "Rocky and Friends," p.m.; "Batman," p.m.; and "Voyage To the Bottom Of the Sea," 6-7 p.m.

Although the station's license does not limit its broadcasting time, the new station will be on the air from 3 to 11 p.m. daily after the official broadcasting date. According to Loren Mathry, operations director for Channel 44, the station will telecast many new syndicated programs as well as old network series such as "I Spy," "Run For Your Life," and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." Loren said that he could not reveal plans about locally-originated programming until later.
