He's been confined to a wheelchair for: nearly 30 years, but can do everything an abled-bodied man can do except walk. Now for my pet peeve: When we are in a a well-meaning but thoughtless waitress invariably turns to me and asks, "And what.

will HE have?" This has happened to me so often that I now have a standard reply: "He is perfectly capable of telling you. Why don't you ask him?" Abby, it is amazing the number of people who 1 assume that because someone is in a wheelchair, he is completely helpless and unable to communicate. Please print my letter. It might wake ups some folks who think a physically handicapped person can neither think nor speak for himself. Thank you! FEDU DEAR FED UP: Your message is an important one.

And while we're on the subject of showing consideration for the physically handicapped, when you are speaking to someone in a wheelchair for more than a minute, please draw up a chair and sit down so that you will both be on the same eye level. Forcing him to look up at you gives him a pain in the neck. Literally! DEAR ABBY: I'm an orchestra director who frequently gets requests to play a number in honor of a wedding anniversary. Salvation Army Aided by United Way Perhaps one of the best general descriptions of the Salvation Army is found in the charter issued in New York State in 1899. Here the Army is. defined as an organization "designed to operate as a religious and charitable corporation with the following purposes: "The spiritual, moral and. physical reformation of all who need it. "The reclamation of the vicious, criminal, dissolute and degraded.

"Visitation among the poor and lowly and sick. preaching of the Gospel and the dissemination of Christian truth by means of open- -air and indoor meetings." The original and still paramount purpose of The Salvation Army is to lead men and women into a proper relationship with God. William Booth, however, was a realist. He recognized that help towards physical regeneration must go hand in hand with spiritual rebirth in a congregation such as he faced. He therefore instituted a welfare program that was and is today a manifestation and practical application of the dominating spiritual motive of The Salvation Army.

Aid is given wherever and whenever the need is apparent, without distinction as to race or creed and without demand for adherence, simulated or real, to the principles of The Army. The 1978 United Way Drive will help to fund the local Salvation Army Corp. One of the services of the Salvation Army is to assist transits passing through our area, with food and lodging. The Salvation Army faithfully follows the words of Christ: "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto Me."
