The Friday production was a disappointing world premiere of a new English adaptation of Rostand's "Cyrano de Bergerac." However, Thursday night saw a bright and excellent performance of Richard Brinsley Sheridan's "The Rivals." There are many good points about the "Cyrano" production, and the new adaptation by James Forsythe certainly Is foremost among them. Forsythe has attempted to re-Interpret the original play in terms of the necessities of contemporary stage presentations. His open stage version tailors the play particularly well for the Asolo Theatre.

Comedy highlight of the play was a scene in which Bradford Wallace as Faulkland displayed different attitudes of indifference toward his beloved. "Cyrano" and "The Rivals," along with "The Taming of the Shrew," "The Mistress of the Inn" and "School for Wives," will be presented in repertory form nightly through Aug. 24 in the Ringling Museum's Asolo Theatre.
