Sponge fishermen from Greece will be brought to Tarpon Springs to help harvest the underwater crop.

So far, about 22 sponge divers and helpers have been approved for special visas. More may become available. LAST MARCH, Louis Smit-zes, president of the Tarpon Springs Sponge Exchange, announced that the Department of Labor had issued clearance orders for 20 divers and 30 helpers. The 22 who have been approved by the Immigration Department are a part of the overall total of 50 men. "If the Department issues visas for the balance and all arrive within the next six to eight months we expect (sponge) production to double or triple," commented Smit-zes.

He said the Gulf of Mexico sponge beds are "very prolific." The Tarpon Springs sponge fleet numbers 13 boats now, he said. Each will offer jobs to four or five men.
